I was just reading about him on wikipedia.org and came across this gem:

Manowar are quite possibly the shittiest actual metal band in the sort of straight metal genre. Maybe not as bad as some of the really bland ones, but their lyrics are so horrible that they're not even laughable, and the music is the same thing, over and over and over and FUCKING OVER again.
However, I will say that Demaio's ability to play flight of the bumblebee is impressive.

i know all lyrics and i've seen them at least 5 time live, both in Portugal and Spain.
when i'm lost on some strange place, i always scream SIGN OF THE HAMMER... BE MY GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE.
i love Manowar that much.

I think, and I will keep thinking unless someone proves im wrong, that Manowar is pure commerce, I can tell through their lyrics, music, things they say. It's a fucking comercial band.
They spend so much time on saying how "true" they are, that they forget to prove it, you cannot say that you are kings of metal, especially when you are far away from beign so.
I can't say they are bad musicians, but theyre not as good as some people present them.
I could start spitting thousands of insults against Manowar but I will reserve those for bands that I really hate.

they still play 80's style heavy/power metal which they start playing... in the 80's.
they stick to same themes (boobs, Valhalla and kicking ass) all the time.
Eric Adams has one of the best voices on the genre (i rate him above Dickinson and Halford).
i could give n reasons why Manowar are "truer" than Suffocation, Cynic or Finntroll but i'll stop. |

I forgot something - I like ONE Manowar song. The Agony and Ecstasy of Achilles (in 8 parts) is almost half an hour, and it's the only story that does justice to the normal pomp and bombast. It's ambitious as hell (which isn't very Manowar) and they pull it off remarkably well for a band who spend most of their time, well, pulling themselves off.

Manowar are pure commerce if and only if they started playing power metal in the 80s in anticipation of the fact that, 20 or so years down the line, the kind of campy theatricality they brought to the genre would be appreciated by ironic types and rebels against metal genres that absolutely need a qualifier before them. They did something that wasn't particularly commerce-generating at the time they began it and hasn't become so over time; the only thing that draws people into them is the fact that they're absolutely, unwaveringly faithful to their original sound (well, not really, but in most of the ways people notice) and image. It's one of the worst gimmicky business plans of all time, if that's what it is. On the other hand, if it's a scheme to win people over by cranking out a product of consistent quality, then it might be a 'commercial' one, but not in the sense you claim.
Short version: I think Manowar are cheesy, derivative, and gay. But they're authentically cheesy, authentically derivative, and authentically gay. Meaning, you don't have to like them, but don't pretend they're not genuine.

You know if you want to get down to it, manowar are not really the kings of metal, mighty warriors on faithful steeds, or fighting the world. But then again, show me a death metal band that have actually mutilated a random woman walking the streets at night, managed to stomach the smell of a dead body, much less fuck it/eat it. And show me all of the hellish places, horrifying demons, and impaled christians that black metal bands scream about so often. I know that not all death metal bands sing about gore, black metal bands about anti-christianity, and power metal bands mystical/fantasy stuff, but they are definitley proven staples of the genres. All of them are either 1.metaphors or symbols of greater things that wouldnt be so cool if it wasn't for the over-the-top imagery, or 2. just haivng extreme themes for the sake of having extreme themes/ having fun. So please take that into consideration before you bash a good metal band any further based soley on their lyrics/themes that are obviously not meant to be taken literally.
.....however, don't think i forgot about the church burnings of a few black metal bands, those sure seemed to go over well
