Eq settings for solos ala' "Reign..." era Slayer?
It's all in the question, I guess. I'm a little confused with the eq settings. I like boosted highs and lows for rhythm work but don't know whether that's good for solos. I'm looking for a solo sound like Slayer on "Reign in Blood", Deicide on their debut album and maybe old Cannibal Corpse, too.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would suggest a fair amount of highs and mids. And turn your amp to eleven.

Thanks for the replies. By the way, what body woods would you recommend for solos? Mahogany perhaps? Seems like Alder is very popular, along with Swamp Ash which produces a "scooped mids" tone. The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously considering going custom shop (Jackson to be exact.)
Thanks again. Keep 'em comin'!

alder all the way man
and for the solo tone thing..... why on earth would you want to sound like that? their solo tones are.... almost painful...
heres what you do to sound like kerry king... take a wah.. and push it all the way to the floor the whole time durring the solo... and there ya go. lmao
the sad thing is i think he actually used to do that...

Cheers, Angry Hobbit. I thought of going with alder too since the scooped mids sound of swamp ash would be suitable for just rhythm work but not so good for solos. Alder being more responsive throughout the whole spectrum would be more versatile, I think. It's worth mentioning that early Fender guitars were made out of swamp ash and later on they started making them out of alder, as you probably know.
I'm not sure whether I understood you here. You're saying Kerry King used a wah pedal on "Reign in Blood"? I didn't know that. I'm not even sure what a wah pedal sounds like. Isn't it the kind the Saint Vitus guitarist used a lot in his solos?
Nah, I don't really want to copy Slayer or the other bands I mentioned. I'm just looking for a tone for solos that will cut through the mix and stuff. I think boosting the mids a little might work. I just gotta experiment a little I guess.
Anyway, thanks a lot man!

Yes Kerry did use a wah but he used it more as a filter by just having it switched on as he played and not using the rocker pedal to create that funky 70's porn sound track effect that tells us a blonde bit of totty is about to get spit roasted!
The important thing is for your solo to cut through the mix. If you play in a band with 2 guitars and your sound is identical to the other how will your solo be heard with any clarity. If you boost your eq at around 1 - 6khz it will cut through a mix and add clarity.

yeah. he used it as more of a boost than a wah.

Reverb helps you to cut through, if you're willing to use it.

It can, but you really have to be careful on how long the tails are and the % mix as the reverb can muddy/swamp the sound and bury it even more.

Yeah, if I'm using reverb I oinly use a very small bit. When you start using greater amounts of it, you start hearing the boundaries of the space the reverb is imitating. When I use reverb, I go for creating distance and space rather than surroundings.
