drum machines
what is everyones recommended drum machine? I currently have one but for some reason it dosent really do double bass, and it dosent sound very real and its very complicated to use. Note that I actually learned how to do everything, but it seems like they could have made it a little easier to get a few beats to go together.

I use the Alesis SR16. It has a pretty good step editor once you dig in it and figure it out. Program wise, check out a program called BFD, just think Big Fucking Drums. That one is pretty good.

Thats a really good question! I'm still learning the program and I still haven't figured the best way to coordinate it with my Fostex 8 track or my other audio sequencing software.
Any one have any ideas?

To be more specific: The problem I have is when I export it as a wav file to my 8 track or another program. If I make a screw-up I have to go into Beatcraft, fix it, re-export the file and then all my other recordings are off. Is this just the way it is or is there a way to get them all under one roof?

I am not familiar with Beatcraft, but once you export the file, it's done. You basically need to get a "finished" drum product, and use that in your multi tracker. Then dub your guitars over it. The way you are trying to do it, once it's done and on your multi tracker, it's done. You might be able to line up the recordings to match a different drum track in your recorder somehow, but it would proably be more work than just rerecording the tracks.

My pleasure. I love beatcraft because it is simple and intuitive to use. Can you tell us how you using it?
(PS - And thanks to lordpj for answering my question)

Using Cubase and assigning some drum samples into MIDI tracks on Channel 10 is the best sounding and feeling 'drum machine' method I can think of. It may take some practice but once you understand how to 'draw in' drum patterns into Cubase you'll be unstoppable. The potential for what beats you want to have and mixing/panning are limitless to only your brain.
Just don't use crappy drum samples. If you must, lowering the pitch of them is a good way to make them sound better. Alot of sampled tom sounds are uber gay.

Well, I used Fruity Loops for making a drum track, it came out ok but a bit 'plastic'. I'm sure when I add my guitars and shit to it it will be better. I can't find good cymbal samples. I think that's the real problem we should be discussing. I mean, there's a manual you can read. How to get realistic samples is a REAL bitch. Yeah, i've tried the 'manytones' samples and they were meh, but does anyone have any samples sampled straight from akit, and actually sound like a fucking kit????

The tutorial gave me some ideas about alternating velocities for more realistic double-bass, one step off on some hits, etc. I made a simple beat (double bass, snare, and one crash), then I ran a line out from my Cube 30 and recorded a guitar bit over it using Mixcraft (also a great program). I have attempted similar stuff with Fruity Loops and LeafDrums, but it always sounded so mechanical. When my friend heard this, he was like "this shit definitely sounds the most real of anything else you've tried so far!" ..now I just need the time and patience to get more complex with it.

This is a good way to get good cymbal samples, once you've listened to them and found the ones you like, you'll need to get the audio files out of your temporary internet files folder.
