Obituary - The Cause of Death

Anyone know what head you'd need to get a sound like this? Or even a sound like the album Masterkiller by Merauder?

Marshall JCM 900 + Pro Co Rat + Turn down tone knob on guitar = Obituary tone, can also get it with cheap line 6 combos too its mainly in the turn down the tone knob

Well they use active pickups, and made the EMG-81 very popular in the 90's, that's where they get all that chugga chugga from.

Rolling down the tone knob... not so sure about that, maybe a little bit, but there tone sounds just slightly scooped to me. Morbid Angel - on albums like Blessed and Covenant - is easy to tell that they roll off the high frequencies a lot.

pff sounds like they use their neck pickups all the time, especially on the end complete. more practically, they probably just have the tone knob lower

dude, turn down the bass on your amp (maybe to about 4)

turn up the mids

turn up the highs

boost the gain with dist pedal/high output pickups.

their tone is unusually easy to achieve

I am brand new here (first post!) but I know what they used on the old stuff from an article in Guitar World.Trevor did all the rhythms on C.O.D and used a hardtail Fender Strat with some kind of humbucker in the bridge-I think EMG 81 with an old ProCo Rat pedal into a 50-watt Marshall JCM800 single-channel head and some Marshall 1960 4x12.He said that the 50-watt versions sounded better than the 100's and could not explain why haha! Not much of a gearhead probably.

That Marshall I bet was loaded with EL-34's instead of the typical metal method of using 6550's.It has that midrangey punch to it that sounds like this kind of power tube.I would also guess that he used the amp distortion and Rat distortion mixed together about 50/50.When I used a Rat pedal on my JCM it was exactly like C.O.D set that way.The trick is to turn the tone knob down on the Rat pedal I found, and max out the bass on the amp, along with a pretty strong amount of mids.Turn the presence off and the treble pretty low too.Hope that helped a little bit!
