Removing Vocals

Hey, my girlfriends brother is trying to make a music video for school, and its rap set to Notorious- Big Pappa i need to remove the vocals, if anyone has a program that can do this id really appreciate it if they removed the vocals, id send them the file. Ive tried taking the vocals out through EQ to no avail, im not sure what to do.

I've used the newer audio audition to do it. It has this setting that you can do this. I mean it doesn't COMPLETELY remove vocals but it comes pretty damn close to it.

I don't think you can truly remove them, however you can use phase cancellation to cancel out common vocal frequencies. Unfortunatly you also eliminate any other tones that are in that range, but with some Rap it may not be as noticable. I know Cool Edit has a vocal remove effect that does just that, I don't know if the demo verstion has that capability, or if you will be able to save it.

I actually helped him out last night on aim. Believe it or not it appeared HARDER to remove those vocals than say a metal song... Oddly enough. I think what it is.. sinec there isn't as much instruments going on.. there is a dependence on each and every one of those freqs for the vocals, drums and what little background music there is. Eventually i ended up just cutting mids crazily.

maybe some kind of karaoke machine thingy????

EDIT: like someone a little above posted. cool edit pro 2 can remove vocals, depending on what channel/frequency their mixed, sumtimes it just takes a bit of vocals away, sumtimes it takes the guitarsolos away (in metal ofcuz) or just removes drums, so its not verry useable i think, also cuz everytime i used it it fucked up the music aswell.

Yup, it always will. It is going to cacel out the freqs close to vox. Stuff like cymbals, guitars get cut out as well. The thing I did like about Cool Edit is that you can adjust the phases so you can put a little bit back in to one or the other channel and add some of the tone back. Unfortunatly it's all you can do. Remember most karaoke/vocal less tunes are re creations by some other band like Guitar Hero did for their music, or actual studio mixes minus the vox.

Luckily in his case he didn't need something of high quality. So.. distortion in the sound wasn't that big of a problem. As long as it sounded like the song he wanted.
