LORDI wins the Eurovision
I just read about this on the Megadeth boards, it's unbelievable. For those of you that don't know who these guys are, see the pic below. Music-wise, they're nothing amazing, but they are pretty good anyway. They play 80s metal, which is very dear to my heart.
Anyway, yeah, they won, hell is freezing over as we speak, and the appocalypse can't be very far either. Hope the trend continues. We need more metal bands in the spotlight.
EDIT: Here's the clip of the performance.

FUCK OFF. THEY ARE GWAR. I have never seen a band look more like anything else ever before. That's ridiculous.
Shame they're so derivative, because they really did win.
Watched the video. Basically, it's GWAR... at the Eurovision. Without the slaves and the crazy sick lunacy... that is, GWAR without the good bits. Three-chord 80's metal.

Ditto, but I am skeptical because of their apperance. I will search them on slsk when I am sober. They better be pretty good, dammit.

I listened to a few GWAR songs, and didn't like them. Something about that band just never appealed to me. Lordi, on the other hand, I really like. Though both bands wear over the top masks and costumes, I prefer Lordi, just because GWAR's costumes look dumb. They have a guy with a big ass bucket over his head. Silly.
Not to say that Lordi should be taken very seriously, either. Personally, I was never a fan of musicians who go to such great lengths to achieve a certain look. It's just pointless. If they spent as much time perfecting their craft as they did designing their costumes, their music would be good enough to stand on its own, without all the silly stuff. Goes for both bands. Still, silly imagery and costumes aside, Lordi appeals to me. It seems to be a thing of you either love 'em or you hate 'em. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
EDIT: The article listed them as a death metal band. I'm surprised no one brought that up yet.

LORDI OWNS
(and to think belgium spended 120.000 euros to get kate ryan there who didnt even get to the semi-finals)

You are so perfectly correct.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not share your finely honed artistic sensibilities. Those fucking peasants. When will they learn real men play in burlap sacks? (On frostbitten tundra, no less.)
P.S. Herman Li spends more on shampoo & conditioner than these guys do on latex.

Lordi look like gwar, but they don't sound like them.
It's cool that they won, maybe Eurovision will slowly become the Eurometal contest. I wouldn't be suprised if we see a few gimmicky rock bands next year.
I voted for Lithuania's "we are the winners of eurovision" because it was the most obvious piss-take ever. The bald guy's spastic dancing was amusung, and the guitar solo mimed on a violin.
Lordi are often referred to as 'that death metal band' at uni, practically no-one likes death metal here or has actually heard any, I let it slide because I can't be arsed to explain that it isn't DM, and no-one really cares anyway.

It was a shit song. It just so happened to be that every other song was ridiculous Euro-pop so cheesy that Tesco have just found a new supplier for their Cheddar range.

I pissed myself silly watching these muppets! I was promised a chainsaw spurting blood but it never materialised
Oooh how scary...they've been accused of satanism!! Oh no mummy!!! And the BBC described them as ...oh gawd.........ahem.......DEATH METAL!!!! Hahahahahahahaha-fucking-hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
What is even funnier than Lodri appearing let alone winning is the people in the press who claim other songs were better or other songs had better singers and Lordi didn't deserve to win because it was all cheap image and gimmic etc?????? Sorry have I missed the boat here, because when did the Eurovision become some great bench mark or well of talent from which we draw our musical greats from!!!!?

I read that too
Way, way back in the mid-80's an arse poodle haired heavy rock band from Scotland called Heavy Pettin' entered the song for Europe competition to represent the UK in the Eurovision. It was at the height of the housewife bothering Bon Jovi fame so they thought they'd be in with a chance if they forced upon us a lame rock tune in the vein of the Coca-cola ads....... except this tune was so dire not even Panda Pop or Tesco no-frills brand would have used it in an ad campaign
Thankfully after their failure to actually score more points than power chords they knew, they slipped very quickly in to obscurity and probably now stock the shelves at Tesco with said Panda Pop!
I also remember as a kid hearing a song from Norway that was called 'Don't Drop That Neutron Bomb On Me'

I don't see why this is a big deal. So a watered down metal band won instead of a watered down pop (redundant phrase, I know) band in a meaningless, overhyped competition - big fucking deal. So most of the world has a bad idea of what death metal is - big fucking deal. That this story wasn't a footnote to some hidden page of the daily newspaper, and then instantly forgotten, is an abomination.

Lordi were cool because:
* The finnish people wanted to withdraw them from the contest.
* Got the most votes ever in a euro vision.
* They were better than everyone else by far.
* Their drummer is a woman.

Maybe so. But I still find Björn Skifs screw up of "Days and evenings" as one of the most entertaining moments of this contest.
As for Lordi winning. Congrats.
Any other questions on the subject, I direct to my sig for a few more days.
