If you have a tuner that says what string you're playing, then theres an easy way I do it. First I tune my E string down. Then I hold it at fret 2, play it, and if my tuner says I'm playing 6E, then you're in D since you're 2 frets lower. If not, tune up or down until it's 6E on 2nd fret.

Or you could just detune only the E string so you can do 1 finger powerchords. A tuner like a Korg GA-30 like everyone and their grandma has has a "flat" button, which sets the tuner to a half step down every time you press it.

If your in standard E tuning:
Tune the low E string to drop D (7th fret on E string will be the same as your next string down OPEN)
then retune using the standard tuning method going down the strings on the 5th frets.
I hope that makes sense... i have no idea what you know about guitars so i tried to sound as simple as possible

Lol, these explanations are silly but it's the only way I was ever able to understand different tunings as a n00b.

Why is the b string at the 4th anyway? I've always wondered that conundrum.

I suspect it's to avoid having any sharps/flats on the open strings.

No, because if they kept doing the 5 up thing, itd just be EADGCF, no sharps or anything.

Why do hotdogs come in packages of 10 and hotdog buns in packages of 8? No one freaking knows the answer but that is just the way it is. To question it is to make people think and it is dangerious for the perfect consumer to actually think.
Just continue to tune your guitar as prescribed and follow the sacred doctrine that 2+2=5

I'm still using that tuner. It fucking brilliant! Especially since it does my seven strings.
I tune a wholetone down. Always. Forever.

I always figured it was because of open chords (E, A ,D, G etc) on an acoustic guitar, you get the bigger sound with less hand work.
Although I dunno why people don't tune their 6 strings B E A D G C in metal, 6 note chords aren't that common (or distinguishable).

If you have a tuner press flat twice then tune to standard. If you want to tune to drop c press flat four times, etc.
