Volume swell
I've been playing around with my pickups and volume pedal alot more than usual and have rediscovered the volume swell. I know this is an old one out of the bag of tricks, but its still a very effective way of causing rising action in the song. i recommend everyone try it.

For things like volume swell, I would generally use effects. But I guess with manual swelling you'd have more control over the speed and wouldn't be restricted to the set timing on your pedal/processor. I guess some things are definitely better manually than with effects (like divebomb for some reason seems more comfortable when in control by hand, though if you want to play and simultaneously dive, a pedal would be a lot easier).

Because the volume knob generally cuts the gain before the actual volume, you usually get a better result with a volume expression pedal, but the old method is fine.

For faster swells, using the volume knob on the guitar works fine, but a volume pedal works far better for both slow and fast swells.

Volume pedal > Volume control on guitar > Volume Swell pedal

A silly thing about my guitar is that it's volume knob (or what's supposed to be its volume knob) only slightly decreases the gain, but doesn't control the volume. I thought that was weird and kind of inconvenient.

most of them do that. I either use Full volume on the guitar or zero when im not playing. I never use it as a volume control. I also have a Korg volume expression pedal and noticed that when using the pedal there is a decrease in the amount of gain coming through the amp (while the pedal is at full volume).... so i really dont like the pedal much either. Actually I use the volume swell in 2 of our bands songs, has some good effect but the gain problem pisses me off with that pedal.
