I was wondering if anyone could help on tuning my guitar 3 1/2, 4 and 4 1/2 steps down. And what kind of strings to buy with this guitar tuning.

What the fuck... 3 1/2 steps? Whats that? Zd tuning?

Why am I gettin the feeling like a drivers ed student is asking where a good place might be to break the counties land speed record in their families car.

If you don't know how to down tune you guitar safely even a little or use the search button in this forum then I must ask who turned on your computer for you?

4 1/2 steps ?! that's like G tuning. Wtf would you play in that tuning. ? anywho, for G tuning a .14-.70 set I suppose. for ( 3 1/2 steps ) A tuning 13.-.60 and for ( 4 steps ) G# tuning also .13-.60 I think.

Buy a bass

Or, serious suggestion, get a baritone guitar.

Very low tuning (like G) is going to sound pretty arse on a normal guitar, and will be a spaghetti fest even with 13s.

Strings tend to say gauges rather than particular tunings.

Nile uses Drop-A, on six strings. For the most part, guitar strings don't have any specific tuning on the package. Strings can be used for any tuning. Figure it out what you want for what tuning by yourself. For instants, I like D'Addario 12-54 guages for B standard, Mike (nHoE) likes Earnie Ball Super Slinkys, 11-49 for the same tuning.

Yo NecroSociety, if you want to practice tremolo picking, you'll learn it badly doing it on such loose strings. Tremolo picking is the principle of even up and down strokes; with loose strings,m they're going to move around, making your playing harder, and sloppy.

Have fun

3 1/2 steps down is Bb or A# and 4 1/2 is Ab or G#

ACtually t his is probably the only "intelligent" post yet. I didn't even think that, that band probably just drops their guitars 2 steps with a 7 string.

So real answer. Buy a 7 string, get the thicker set of strings made for a 7 string if they even have them... then drop the bitch x2 steps. or however many.

Hilarious. And accurate too imo.

I second the baritone recommendation, and the 7-string to a lesser extent.

But really just be logical about it: if you're going to tune a regular ol' guitar that far down you're going to want pretty thick strings.

As for Martinmax's question: nobody's going to be able to tell you what gauge is going to work for you aside from sheer luck. Start with .10's and go from there is all anybody can really say. And really you shouldn't have to be told to start with .10's that's common knowledge and if that doesn't apply to you, you can get that information without having to post on an internet forum. That's when you put your intelligence on display for ridicule, and that's not necessary in this case.

What band? Nile?

And yea, just "Buy a 7 string". Cause y'know you can just go to the store and buy one with some rolls of pennies you have lying around...

Any guitar can use thick guage strings, but you may have to file the nut to fit the string in there, or you can just play with thicker strings until they eventually make the right size crevice in the nut, like me. If you have a trem you will need to adjust the spring system in the back. Oh and you may have to adjust the truss rod, but I personally never have and never needed to.BTW I use 13-56 just so you know how thick we're talking.

What Thorns said, any guitar can be adjusted to use even the thickest strings or low tuning with little effort. You just got to know what your doing.

I tune to F# on a six string.

I have absolutely no problems with warping etc. You will have to set up your guitar to accomodate low tunings like that though.

With regards to strings. I play a Zakk Wylde Boomers set (the thickest set of the two available) and replaced the low E and A strings with a 0.72 and a 0.64, through away the 0.70 and shifted the rest of them down a string. Works perfectly. But as stated already you will have to file your nut a bit, and if using bass strings...you'll have to scribe out your tuning pegs.

If you want a custom set of strings check out Pyramid Strings in Germany/Online. They will make you a set to your specs/tuning and you shouldn't have to mess about with pegs.

You only need a Baritone to achieve the same tension rate with thinner strings.

And just because you play that low doesn't mean it'll sound crap...thats down to you and your tone not your tuning.
