I luckily found out about them at just hte right time. Right when i picked up guitar. Playing their songs extremely pushed my guitar playing.
But unlucky for me i didnt' know about Dark Tranquillity and alot of other melodic death metal bands. I've been into making music like that.... for awhile now and i didn't even relaly know many other bands that sounded similar.

Yeah, I had the Guitar World lying around with the article on his death in it. I didn't start listening to them till late 02, early 03. So when I REALLY got into them, I dug that old article up and its now on my wall.
Felt like sharing.
Another one, which isn't metal, but BearVsShark. I was at a show that they played at, but missed them. Picked up their album two weeks later, and kicked myself in the ass, cause its one of my favorite albums ever, and one of my favorite bands. So they split up in January, I think it was, and now I'll never see them live. That makes me damn sad.

Death (the actual ceasing to exist) is one of those things that I don't like to hear about to begin with, so at the time I was just like "that sucks." Now that I'm a fan of the band though, it hits a little harder. "Empty Words" still chokes me up a little.

One of the silly clown masks is a kabuki mask. I shouldn't have to say anything else.
I don't mind people being interested in the Middle Ages so much as the ridiculous romanticized cartoon version of it people seem to have. But a time in which the internet did not exist and the majority of people were lucky if they lived long enough to be a slave has a lot to recommend for it. And, of course, the whole Lords of Misrule thing at the carnivals is some of the coolest shit I know of. Imagine that happening today. I'll leave you to that.

I think every band I started listening to was integral to the overall evolution of my metal listening experience. BUT there are a ton of bands I wish I never heard, mainly Nu metal/Metal Core bands/Nu Death bands. An example would be this local band that decides playing Slipknot bouncey shit and Cannibal Corpse riffs in one song would be a good idea, then they have these breakdowns that all the metalcore kiddies get asswet over. eeeek that just scares me.
