I used to have hair down to around my lumbar region. Now I have it down to 1/4 of an inch from my scalp. Hate to break it to you hippies, but this is much better.

You do have a point. Long hair isn't practical..I find as my hair gets longer, it's almost mandatory to put in into a pony tail, especially in this windy ass province.
Although, headbanging is so much enjoyable if you have long hair...however, eating soup is not.

mines a decent bit past my shoulders, but not where i want it. i have split ends, and worse. my hair is dry and "brittle" and it snaps off in hair ties and my ring. sucks.

Haha yeah, I used to have hair up to shoulder length but got it cut recently. So much better. Long hair just gets in the way of whatever you're doing, unless you're doing something which has you facing upwards.

Oh and for the record, it's not just long because I'm of the female variety, I cut it short 3 years ago and it grew back to the lenght it was, and I hadn't cut it all my life prior to that (15 years). I have to agree with BeerDragon, it is absolutely badass when the hair blows in your face and your hair trails behind you. I generally bind mine in a ponytail and add an another hairtie at the end of it.

I had a tape measure handy so I measured mine. It's 32 inches from the top of my head to the ends --about butt length. I trim it about every couple months or so.
When I do get it cut it will probably be very short, but everytime I get the notion someone compliments me on it and I don't. And the ole guy says he likes it long. Usually it's in a braid down the back and if I'm doing other stuff I'll wrap it up with a clip because my hair isn't the type to stay behind me.
Down side is getting it rolled up in a seatbelt, shutting it in a car door, being in the wind and trying to detangle it after, and please, put it in front of you when you're sitting on the commode so it doesn't wipe the lid. ewww If there's ever a hair in food and it's 100 feet long there's no denying who it came from either.

My fringe and side's creep just to the bottom of my chin ( and the lower jaw at the sides ) , and the back is curly as fuck , but is just over my shoulders.
The fringe is annoying as fuck though.. i still cant keep it up in a bobble
But i suppose it aint bad for just over a year of growing it.

I liked it when i had it and was doing stuff with it, but other than that was much more of a hassle. Especially when you work somewhere with a shit ton of dust and dirt. It gets in you're hair and feels like shit.

take a second look at that sentence 
the other day i blowdried my hair, which takes 30 minutes, and then the next day went to the beach and swam, fuck! actually, i dont even like to not blowdry it. if it dries by itself it will take for ever and get my shirt wet. if it tie it up, it will dry with a ugly ass crease where the tie was, which is ok if i dont plan on wearing it down until i next wash it. so, though its a hassle, i blowdry it. |

Blowdrying every day after a shower, at least for five minutes, together with, and this is very important, a good brush. If you then wish to make it look good, you just keep at it with the hair dryer and finish it all off with the dryer at weak and a fine comb. If you have some experience at it, it is quite possible to force it to stay away from your face and eyes altogether in that wavy fashion that many girls just adore. Yes, I do it for that reason too.

Had hair down past me nipples for about 15 years, cut it off about 10 years ago, had a bit of a Eraserhead bouffant for a while now it's granny frighteningly short (i.e. shaved down to the scalp Kerry King style!)

it has been a a few inches past my nipples at its longest. i'm gonna get it trimmed soon probably back up to just above my shoulders. then i think sometime this summer i may get it cut short.

Get your hair layered instead of thinned. There's a lot of different styles depending on your texture and the length you want it. Don't fight the natural tendencies or it will drive you nuts. I like no fuss hair.
I used to panic getting a trim because when I was a kid it meant that I wanted a trim, but mom wanted it cut shorter. I do my own trimming now to rid the split ends. They don't make it bushy, but they make it break easier.
A couple things about that is when you wash your hair when it's long do the scalp more than the ends. Just let the watered down shampoo go to the ends and squeeze it through. You want to keep some of the natural oils and don't want to rough up the cuticle of the hair. That's what keeps it from being frizzy and splitting. And when you wash it don't attack your head. That's not necessary.
Air dry if you can and blow dry it from the roots if you use a blow drier. The ends will dry quick enough. If you want to lessen the tangles get a diffuser for your blow dryer. It lets the heat go through, but it doesn't blow hair every which way.
Comb it with a wide toothed comb from the tips to the roots in comfortable sections. And use a leave-in conditioner. If you get a snarl, go from bottom to top with a comb or a pick and it should come right out. If it's really tricky put a little conditioner on your fingers and rub it in. The snarl should come out.
