Very strange looking guitar.

I asked my dad, he used to play some many years ago, and said he'd seen a few like this, but couldn't remember how exactly they worked either.

So, how are the strings locked into place, and how do you tune these things up with no tuners present?

Just curious. Here is a video of a guy playing a light progressive rock solo over aeolian mode with the guitar I'm talking about.

Looks like one of those steinbrenner guitars. Dude's got some skill. Hey I seen your clip as well. Nice riff! Alt picking slays!

the top of the neck (where the head should be) acts like a locking nut... you use an allen wrench to hold the strings in place. And the tuners could be anywhere... they could be where floyd rose fine tuners are located: housed at the bridge, or they can be kept in a cavity in the back, or cavities in the sides... those are all the kinds i've seen...

Yeah, that guy does have some crazy skill. I love prog rock and metal, sounds like a little jazz and blues thrown in as well, but yeah, the guitar just caught me off guard, so I thought I'd ask to see any of you guys knew what it might've been.

Glad you like my riff, thats just something that I'm trying to put in a song I've been working on a little bit, but I only been playing a year, and just started working on alternate picking and some simple sweeps just this month, but I'll try and get up a few more random ass riffs I've been working on and you can view them if you like.

That's a steinberger, and they are pretty cool guitars.

About 10 years ago, I was in a band with a guy who had one, and I ended up playing his more than my own at the time!

Yep a Steinberger. I believe Lenny Kravitz plays one often. They sell em at Musicyo.com along with Kramers, other rare oldschool guitars.

Not meaning your video in particular, but most of the guitar videos on youtube make me feel really good about how I've progressed on guitar. There are some really bad ones.

Im fairly sure you have to get special strings for these guitars. They need a set with balls on both ends to fit into neck and bridge lockers.

Didn't EMG start making pickups for Steinberger, before they were called EMG. I think it's in EMG's FAQ but I can't be bothered to go look.

I always thought they'd make great travel guitars because they are so small/headstockless.

Probably don't sustain too well because of the lack of a headstock mass... I hear some models have carbon necks.

They have active pickups, so I don't think sustain is really a problem.

+1

just found a cool thing about those guitars... a newer version has a bridge that moves back and forth so you can change the scale of the guitar from 24.75 to 27"... or sometihng along those lines...

yeah saw it in my magazine. from nonrmal scale to baritone. i nkow this guy who has 2 of them. one has passive single coils though. i dont like the way they look but tey are really confortable to play. the ones with carbon necks they advertise by standing on their guitar propped between something. strong shit!
