My Guitarist and I are trying to record a CD using stuff we bought(mics, preamps etc) so we can take our time on it. Well we recorded a sample of a song and put it on his myspace for critique and advice.

Anyway I'd love to hear any advice about improvements regarding the mix and the quality of the instruments.

Here is the lowdown on what was used to record everything



To record the guitars we put Washburn Dime 333 through a Digitech Metal Master Pedal and into a Marshall AVT 150 Head with a Marshall AVT Angled Cab. The cab has a Stageworks 2 Channel 15band EQ and a BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer running through the effects loop. The amp is placed on a chair and facing a corner from 4 feet away. We covered the walls with a few blankets and put the mic(a Shure SM57) 2 feet away facing the center of the cab. We ran that through a Eureka Presonus and into the recorder, a Yamaha AW16G.

Bass we went direct through an ART DI/O 2 channel preamp and into the AW16.

Drums we have a 5 piece Tama. We used an SM57 going into the Presonus for the snare, 2 Senheiser 421s going into the ART DI/O for the Toms, Audix I5 going through the Stageworks EQ on the floor Tom, and an Audix D6 going through the Stageworks EQ for the bass drum. The overheads are Nady CM90s going directly into the yamaha.

I think that about covers the specs.

As far as I can tell, that sounds pretty damn good. The levels could use adjusting on some things, but overall, that sounds very good. Definately something you can work with.

guitars are brittle, scoopy, and buzzy. me no likes... but with that setup you'll have a hard time getting other sounds.

Could changing the amp position and the mic placement help at all or should I get another distortion pedal?

ditch the pedal and maybe the bbe, play the amps distortion, up the mids and lows, cut some highs.

Sounds like me and you have alot of similar gear, as i have almost all that stuff haha, and i do this very thing every day of the week.

I would not use the shure mic how you are doing it now

Btw it sounds decient but the exact reason you shouldn't use the mic how you have is why it doesn't sound better.

Start off by micing the cab close with the 57, such as the bottom right cone. Place it directly up against the grill, about 1 inch from the edge of the cone. Basically so you're micing more of the outer edge of the cone.

Next buy a condenser mic and place it exactly where you were placing you're shure. I do the very same thing and it rocks.

The reason behind all of this is, the shure 57 is not made to pick up acoustics and room sound, thats why its a close mic thats shaped how it is. A condenser mic is set up so that it picks up EVERYTHING. There for the sound blasting it from all angles is what makes the shit shine like magic.

And if you're using the same art preamp i have. It fucking rocks. I record everything through it, and out its digital outputs.

We have some Nady CM 90s. We also have a MXL 992 Vocal Mic. Would one of those work?

is your technique for micing the guitar cab common practice, because i've been trying to find a decent way of micing it. it either turns out too grainy sounding or too distant sounding.

do the mic thing, then ditch the guitar stuff xdx said. dime your mids, turn the gain down a little and leave the scoop button in the out position. but overall the song is great, keep it up

ACtually yes the mxl 992 would work just fine for that. I have the 990 myself, but the 992 would work too.

And DeathCS if you're refering to to what i posted about it, i've deffinately seen evidence that it is. Basically when miking a guitar 412 cabinet the best possible (Standard) positions that are commonly used are around the edge of the rim and with a condenser mic.. about the middle of the 412s , 1-3ish feet away.


Best idea is to use a headphone set up where you're getting direct monitor from you're mic and listen to what it sounds like when you move it closer or further away, higher or lower and you can get a really good sound as a result.
