Just sayin now, that these threads always go a similar way.
People come in offering help, then people come in saying dont listen to them, do it how you want and feel right with, then its argued that while thats agreeable, there are certain more profitable ways to do what ever is in question. Someone else will come in and say you should have searched before asking, and offer up some mostly obscure links to previous topics. Someone else, if they are feeling ok, will come in and say it should be in another thread.
Soooo.... there you go. We can skip all that and just suggest how we use them.
This is how I sort of do it, but the pick normally is angled slightly differently (it becomes obvious when you try it) The picture here was to show how to do parts in Earthly Love.

I hold my pick almost exactly like Chuck Schuldiner.

just hold it comfortably. i highly recommend using your thumb and index finger to hold the pick. find a way to do that comfortably. of course, van halen held his with his thumb and middle finger, and some people use their thumb, index, and middle finger (i started out this way a long time ago but its really not very good for speed imo).
so yeah.. use your thumb and index finger, and make sure that it feels comfortable and you can be relaxed while holding it. relaxation is very key to playing guitar, so if holding your pick makes you have to tense up your hand into a fist or something, it's probably not ideal.

Yeah comfortable is most important there isn't a right or wrong way really.
I hold a pick with my thumb and middle finger.

powers, how does chuck hold it?
oh and i hold my pick with with the pad of my thumb on one side
and then i hold my first finger like this: on it's side and pointing more or less towards the tip. the tip is perpendicualr to the strings and i usually slant it

I hold mine with my index finger and thumb but I change the positioning slightly depending on what I'm doing, i.e. trem' picking etc... and also what type of music I'm playing, I hold my pick a little looser and with more of the point sticking out when I'm playing blues but hold it rather more firmly when I'm playing metal with less of the pick sticking out to hit the strings. I always have trouble with the way I hold my pick but what I've found is that it also depends on what sort of pick you use, what thickness etc... I made a similar thread a while back.

there's no right or wrong answer. it all has to do with prefernce. so just mess around and find which way works best

I used to hold my pick like that too but just in the last few months i've for no real reason switched to just my thumb and middle finger. For me its made my playing more precise and a little quicker. i find i can lock my hand in a solid shape easier that way. yea there is a proper way to hold a pick but as far as i know its not one of those techniques that will later hinder your progression if you prefer something else.

I use my thumb, middle, and index. I can still play pretty fast like this. The only problem this gave me was learning to do pinch harmonics. I do those the wrong way, I hold my pick with my thumb and middle and use my pointer to get the "squeal" rather than the thumb. Does anyone else do that?

Marty Friedman said in some video most of the time he has no idea what he's doing as far as picking goes. I think that's actually a good thing rather than having a routine mechanical way to pick, that would have no style.
