Bands That Tune Higher Than E?
Does anybody know of any bands that tune higher than E? Metal or non metal.
My contribution would be the "Pure Holocaust" album by Immortal was in F (one 1/2 step higher than normal)

Burzum's "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" 1/2 step and I believe "Dunkelheit" too but I think guitars were tuned there 1/3 or 1/4 step higher. I cannot recall more examples.

If it's only 1/3 or 1/4 step higher/lower AND it's something like Burzum, it's probably because of the recording rather than the actual tuning of the guitars.

I know some bands in the early days didn't have tuners so just tuned to whom evers guitar was tuned up, the first couple of Sepultura albums for example.
Also tape speed in the studio has affected recordings making them play a little sharp or flat.
AC/DC's Highway to Hell album the guitars were recorded with the drums slightly speeded up and then after the guitars were added the whole lot was slowed back down.
On Shot in the Dark isn't Jake E Lee's A string tuned up to B?
A non metal band who have used F and F# tunings is The Smiths.
What about bands that have used capos to create alternate tuning?

I know Sonic Youth used alot of really funky open tunings.
Same with Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Its rumored that their album "F# A# Infinity" was tuned to F# A# F# A# F# A#, but not one has really sat down and figured out if you could play it all like that.
Not that anyone here cares, just contributing.

Van Halen tuned flat on the s/t album and standard for most (if not all?) of the albums after that.
Killing is My Business was 1/4 step up, due to poor recording equipment because Dave didn't have much money then.

I think Eddie may have used drop D from time to time?
And the reason Dave didn't have a lot of cash is that when they got the advance from the record label they blew most of it on powdery substances to stuff up their noses, or so the story goes

Nope, just half step down and standard. And the occasional Drop D. Anything else would've been a recording error I guess.

I just tuned DOWN to standard because I was figuring out this Rigor Mortis song, so yeah... I figure it was because of the way they recorded it...

That would make sense for the guitar with the screwdriver slide effect.

Why would anyone want to tune 1/3 or 1/4 step up?? Is it for necks which are scallopped? Otherwise it's out of tune. To me it's black and white.
Notice no death metal bands doing retarded tunings... Probably because black metal shouldn't exist anyway
and death metal bands know what the fuck they're doing

Yeah also the vinyl version of kill em all is alot slower and lower.
And Problematic...........Death metal don't use retarded tunings? I think even though they may be good bands, G# is a pretty retarded tuning if you ask me.

Some bands tune to 441hz, not the standard 440.

Thats a problem with the record.
If you slow a recording down, the key its in gets lower.
And to answer the question about 1/3 and 1/4 step tunings, many instruments from other cultures (take India for example) have different steps between notes. What I mean is instead of the normal half step you see in Western and European countries, they use 1/8th, 1/4th, and other seemingly odd steps. Our ears aren't really trained to hear it, so it just sounds out of tune and weird to us.

My old record player used to spin a little fast so all my vinyl used to be almost up to F.

Well, thats just the "theory."
It is also Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and they don't really like explaining themselves very much. I could've missed the explanation somewhere, but who knows.

I'm pretty sure at least some if not all of VH2 is in Eb... I always play along with DOA anytime I'm tuned a half step down.
