The effect of Morrisound Studios on death metal
i'm not sure how many people actually pay attention to where bands record and mix their albums, but in the early 1990s morrisound studios so an obscene amount of massively popular death metal bands come to record and mix their albums
here is a list of bands/albums ive compiled that were done there just so you can get a glimpse of the effect this studio had on the metal scene
atheist worked with scott morris from day one, recording all their demos up to UP with him
cancer - death shall rise
deicide - legion
cannibal corpse - tomb of the mutilated, butchered at birth
malevolent creation-ten commandments, maybe retri
gorguts - first (two?)
assuck
cynic - focus
coroner - no more color
death - ITP
napalm death - harmony corruption
morbid angel - domination
suffocation - effigy
obituary
all of those classic bands passed through this studio to get their music out. think about that!

If I'm not mistaken, they had this one guy who actually liked the music who knew how to produce and mix that kind of music ... He ended up producing a ton of albums at Morrisound.

How the hell did you know that Tranny's dad's name is Tom? And met him? That post doesn't make sense.

First of all, it's Jim Morris, not tom.
Second, Individual Thought Patterns was not done with him, but with Scott Burns. Symbolic, The Sound Of Perseverance, and Control Denied, however, were done with Jim Morris.
BURN!

Unless, of course, he meant this guy. I had no idea there was another Morris.
"Morrisound Recording, Inc. began in June of 1981 as a mobile 8 track analog recording system built into a "Hi Cube" van (not too different from a UPS delivery truck). The original staff included Jim Morris, Tom Morris, Laurel Morris (hence Morrisound) and Rick Miller. After picking a rental location in Tampa with the highest available ceilings, and spending 6 months building and wiring the interior, Morrisound became the first new 24 track facility on the west coast of Florida."

If Morrisound managed Roadrunner/Roadracer, that makes them okay by me.

I expected this to be a substantive post about how Jim Morris revolutionized death metal production in a way that endures to this day and still shapes how we judge DM records. But I guess not.

You needed to make that clearer with your first post. It came off as though you were just pointing out the obvious and passing it off as something else.
I spent the past five days in TX and have to catch up on schoolwork. So I'd like to help, but don't quite have the time. I recommend you start with the success and influence of Obituary's Cause of Death album and think about what separates that kind of production from the work of the previous generation's most extreme bands, how the style of production got associated with the death metal 'sound,' etc.' There's a lot of shit on that already out there, but, like I said, I don't have the time to find it.

It's anything but pointless. It's finding out what makes the music you like how it is; in other words, finding out how a good product becomes good. It also means figuring out how the metal scene works. Aspiring musicians should be doing this, but are often too lazy. Any guesses as to who suffers as a result? Music fans, both actively by recognizing that an inferior product is being produced at an alarming rate and passively by accepting this inferior product as good enough. If we had more people who were ready to do some thinking about music in context we'd probably have some better bands out there, and possibly, though probably not, less of a sea of crap.
But, of course, we don't. We have half-assed interest by people who want to think about something, but not if it takes work.

Oh ok I'll post something proper.
Early 90's was a good time for Death Metal, but unfortunately pretty much every man and his BC Rich ended up with that 'Morrisound' production and it became a little production line-esq.

I never left.
That happens with every good strong production sound. You can see it happening right now with the Andy Sneap sound. He's even worried about it, because he's seen it happen in the past. Because he's actively interested in the history of his profession and art.
