wintersun-back in the studio
should be pretty damn good
Quote:
WINTERSUN, the band led by former ENSIFERUM singer Jari Mäenpää, have posted the following message on their official web site:
"We entered the studios [on May 2]. The day went setting up the drums, changing the drumheads, miking the drums, making the basic drumsound and Kai playing too fast all day long (and driving Nino crazy). Jiiiihhaaaaa! [On May 3] we [started] the actual recordings.
"In this studio session we will be recording only the drums, rhythm guitars and bass. I [Jari] will continue recording the vocals, solos and synths/samples at my home 'studio'/rehearsal place during the summer. The melody/acoustic guitars I will be recording with Teemu. The mixing will take place in autumn and the release is scheduled for the end of this year.
"The album will be called 'Time' and the track titles are:
01. Sons of Winter and Stars
02. Land of Snow and Sorrow
03. Time
04. Fire
05. One with the Shadows
06. Storm
07. Silver Leaves
"Seven epic songs and quite long ones, over 65 minutes of material. It's a theme album. The music has some new dimensions, but has also the recognizable 'WINTERSUN style.' So hopefully you will stay patient, the wait will be worth it!"

pfft, its awesome for any kind of music.
im sure it will be just as good, if not better, and i dont usually anticipate an album as much as this. but that probably has something to do with the fact that i dont always stay up-to-date on release dates. so now i am waiting for both the new Ancient Rites, and the new Wintersun!

Here's a dissappointing update from the official wintersun website addressing the new album that was to be released this summer...
Quote:
The mix has been cancelled and the release of "Time" is delayed even more. I´m sorry to disappoint everyone...again, but the album is not gonna be released this year. And unfortunately Nino has the Sonic Pump Studios booked full for this year, so we might have to think of something else.
Reason for this delay is that, I´ve set the bar really high on this album, but my equipment aren´t even close what I need to work faster. I have to push the gear what I have to the limits to get the best out of them and I have to do a LOT of workarounds which is very time consuming. Then all the thousand technical problems added into the mix isn´t helping. Basically every piece of gear has been broken at one time or another during the making of this album, feels like there´s a curse. Takes ages to solve the problems and send the stuff back and forth making the warranty changes. All this has made me very frustrated and un-inspired. Hasn´t helped with my stress about the deadlines either, slowing me even more. I work the best when I´m happy and lots of times I haven´t been. It´s been the most difficult record to make in my life. The album is very huge, I don´t know if it´s gonna fit even in the 74 minutes of a CD. The track count is very high, about 200 tracks per song. So it´s almost like two albums in one (or three Slayer albums :P). But I´m gonna finish this, no matter what.
Now some update of the album progress: All the drums, bass and all guitars (rhythms/melodys/solos and acoustics) has been recorded (probably some add ons will be recorded when the synths and vocals are done). Then I´ve pretty much finished with the intro, that I´ve decided to include on the album. Really atmospheric and huge with some magical Japanese influences. I´ve also started to compose and arrange the synths. I´m trying to avoid the basic (and boring) layering chord stuff and create something really cool to boost the magic of the songs into new dimensions. I haven´t been able to start singing yet, because my preamp and mike "died", but hopefully soon I can. There´s been a demand to know what is going on, so there we have it. Unfortunately the news ain´t always good.
I wish you all a great summer! (But sadly, it´s gonna be a Wintersunless summer).
Jari

Can't wait till it comes out. It's gonna be so badass.

read that sad news a while back. fuck. the last line was funny though
anyway, that sucks, but eventually it will be a part of our collections/playlist/HORDE, and the wait wouldnt have mattered. although, i think there is one thing missing, in this waiting period... A FUCKING TRACK TO KEEP US OCCUPIED/EXCITED! really, he should release just one fucking song as a sample or something.

Bad news for all your wintersun fans expecting this kick ass release this year...
Date Posted: 2007-04-24 06:57:16
Unfortunately the release of WINTERSUN's new album "Time" has been pushed back again. "The mix has been cancelled and the release of 'Time' is delayed even more", WINTERSUN guitarist and singer Jari Mäenpää explains in an official statement. "I'm sorry to disappoint everyone...again, but the album is not gonna be released this year. And unfortunately Nino has the Sonic Pump Studios booked full for this year, so we might have to think of something else."
Full statement can be found at their website.

Hahah, I was flooded with disappointment, once again, after reading that.
I've lost a lot of interest in hearing this new album of theirs.

Jari is waiting until the last member of The Beatles dies before he releases the new album.

Well to defend myself, I can confidently say that no one has ever made this kind of record with the hard/software I have available. (Or even with the best studios and equipment out there I might boldly add). And I´m just nobody from Konala making this album in a bedroom wannabe studio.
If we would had Axl Rose´s budjet from the beginning, we would most likely already be finishing the next album (technology DOES help!). So if you want to see your fave bands flourish, always vote with your wallets. Infact do that with everything else in your life. For example, I don´t vote for shitty things like McDonalds anymore (well maybe sometimes, once a year perhaps).
The problems we´ve had have been unbelievable and the whole thing got delayed a lot which has led to other problems, like tons of stress and tension, which have led to loss of inspiration. I´ve had some serious "writer´s blocks" recently. This is the first time in my life actually when I´ve had them, that has scared me a littlebit. So you see all this "snowball effect" happening and it just has gotten harder towards the end.
So I have now started to take some "protective measures". To just harshly and arrogantly say it: I´ll try "not give a fuck" about deadlines or peoples opinions/demands and just work with my own speed and rhythm. The album will be done, when it´s done. I feel this is the only way and the fastest way to get through this.
I also cancelled our 3 shows in May, I was thinking about them everyday and they were really distracting me. To me live and studio is totally two different mindsets and I can´t just jump between them like a robot.
I take full responsibility of this. I´m sorry for if someone already bought a ticket to those shows, but my main priority is now to finish this album and those shows would have again delayed the release a lot.
Also we wouldn´t have been ready to play any new songs. I must first finish the mixing of the whole album and then I need to mix the backing tracks and arrange the live guitar lines with Teemu and then we all need to practise the songs together of course. And we need to upgrade our livegear as well, it´s been very humble all these years. So lot to do, before we can play these "monsters" live.
The mistake that I made, was to dive carelessly and too quickly without careful planning into this huge project and announce the world that "Wintersun is working on a new album". Next time I´ll announce a new album, will be after I have mixed it. Razz
There will be fast stuff, but those who are wishing something like the first album, will probably be disappointed. This is a different kind of album. More deep feelings, nature, universe, love, time, death. The sound will be fatter and heavier (also beautiful and traditional), maybe because the orchestrations and low tunings (D, dropC and one one song drop Bb) and slower tempos, but there will be fast stuff too, I love fast stuff, but this just turned out to be more slow.
First album was maybe 60% fast, 40% slow. This one probably 60% slow 40% fast, but also remember that this is 25 minutes longer album than the first.
Hopefully this babble made some sense about the whole situation and cools down some hot feelings over here. Now I gotta get back to it...

Hazaa!

Good to hear an update from Jari. Now... GET TO WORK! I hope you get this album finished this year or even within the first half and not winter of 09.

That's not the final version, so no worries about the crappy quality.
I think the cover art is really good. Not just a mediocre metal cover with skulls and everything being all grim and stuff.

I don't know... I love Wintersun, but this is getting silly. Maybe Jari is just a guy who sortof likes making music whenever it's convenient to make it, and he got somewhat big without meaning to.

Just heard Time, disappointingly tame after the debut which was undescribably virtuoso.
It's like having a genius kid and then having a second, hoping it'll be as smart.
The chances just aren't that good.
