Floating Bridge tuning tips

Ibanez givin me hell!

Fuck!

Been tuning the damn thing for over an hour now, string broke and installed different sized strings, now its kicking my ass.

So I adjusted the springs to a refined yet not 100% perfect tension, and now it keeps fucking up cause the stings gotta keep getting tuned up! wtf! it doesn't make sense!

When I tune the bottom 3 strings, theyre in tune. I move on and my the time I've covered the whole range, the bottom three are more than a whole semitone lower! Maddening! I keep tuning up and up, and then the tension of the springs in the back need to be adjusted. FUCKING CYCLE AGAIN.

So anyway, when you guys tune the bridges, do you skip strings (e.g. 1 - 6, 2 - 5, 3- 4 etc.) or how? I need some tips before I throw the damn guitar off a cliff.!

PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEse.

That's normal, it's how you tune a floyd.

You have to repeat the cycle.

1) Tune each string one by one, when you get the the last one, repeat. The tension will gradually balance.
2) If you discover the spring tension is too low, tighten the screws and go back to 1)

It can take a while.

There are loads of threads about this.

Yeah its just a whole fucking lot of tuning. Just keep re tuning over and over, then adjusting the tremelo balance as needed. I have done it a lot and it still takes me over an hour. In fact I'm blocking the trem in one of my guitars at the moment, its gonna make restrings more fun.

Yeah I figured there was loads of threads.. but I searched once vaguely and meh. Different mood you know.

I figure you just gotta get personally aquainted with the guitar. Like know eaxctly what to do in each moment. So yeah I left it for today my back's killing me and im almost there... damn. Do the pros get their guitars tuned professionally?

Here's how I tune mine, and it never takes me more than a few minutes.

Tune close to pitch, but a little flat.

Overtune low E.

Overtune low A.

Overtune low D.

Slightly overtune G string.

Very slightly overtune B.

Tune high E to pitch.

With this process, as I add tension to the higher strings, the trem will pull forward and lower the pitch of the lower strings back to where they regularly should. I have to repeat this process just a few times, but I do it pretty fast, get my guitars in tune, and they stay in tune very well.

Do the exact opposite if all of your strings are sharp. Sometimes weather will cause your guitar to sound in tune to itself, but all strings may be equally out by a few cents. Check the trem angle. You'll notice if you tune it to pitch, everything will be right back on track if the guitar has a good set-up.

Do not forget to stretch the hell out of your strings once changing a set.

Also, this takes me a little longer when I'm changing strings, because I might have to adjust the claw a little. I apply the same techniques with the claw.

If the guitar is almost in tune, but the trem angle is forward, screw in the claw but overshoot slightly negative, because it's going to pull the strings sharp, and by the time you loosen the tension, it will bring the trem angle back down to where it should be. Repeat a few times as necessary as well.

one way to speed up the process is by overcompensating. what i mean is, you know that changing the tension in a string affects all others (ie making one flatter makes the rest sharper, but more so for the bottom strings.. the top 3 strings don't seem to be as affected in my experience). so if they're all flat, and you're going to have to sharpen them.. what happens to the low E string when you tune it to pitch and then make all the other strings more sharp? the low E will go way flat again.

so basically overcompensate on the lower 3 strings. start by tuning low E to F, A to A#, and D to D#.

actually, Low E should be overcompensated the most, and D less than E and A, but you'll figure that out for your tuning/string gauges as you go.

i've been using floyds almost exclusively for 10 years now, and it doesn't take long at ALL for me to change strings. i do, however, stick to the same tuning (well, either E or Eb) and string gauge.
