Neck pickup thread

Sorry for me posting a thread similar to many on here, but meh.

So anyway, Im thinking of buying a new neck pickup for my RG 1527; i.e. basswood body, 7 string, tremolo bridge, and nice maple neck.
When I switch to the neck pickup for solos I no doubt get a definite solo style sound, but quite frankly its not what im looking for. It gives me a kinda Metallica / 80's, 90's heavy metal style.
This is ok, but I don't favour it.

What I would like is kinda a dreamy, beautiful, almost clean sound.. Do you get me? Its hard to think of many bands that get a sound like me... uh... maybe, sleep terror? Hate Eternal? So basically not a really screechy, screamy tone, but a softer, smoother tone.

Im definantly going passive. Ive got a EMG 81 / 85 setup in my Warlock and it does nothing for me.

I would probably be coupling it with a DiMarzio X2N-7 or similar, would a lower output pickup (im guessing) be shit for a very high output pickup? If I had them both on at the same time would the tone be crappier than just switching from neck pickup for solos and back to bridge for rythym? Hopefully someone out there knows...

What amps settings would I need to activate the smooth sorta tone? I know all amps are different, but basically what?.. lots of high, half mid, lots of bass, prescence... etc.???

One last semi-relevant question... Do active pickups use electro-magnets and passive pickups use bar magnets? This could be kinda obvious (hence the battery for active pups) but meh... and body know definantly?

Thanks....

For the neck, do they make PAF Pros for 7 strings? If so, try that, I think that's what Rutan uses for solos.

I know that when I have the $ I'm putting a Dimarzio PAF Pro 7 in the neck of my Ibanez.

So a Paf pro it is then. Is it good for jazz aswell? Time to check out reviews...

Oh and *insert name here*... There's a fucking thread for everything. There is rare occurence of an original topic. Sticky's encapsulating a very broad topic are seriously not helpful. Think about:... How often does the average person with average advice visit one of those threads? I think i visited the EMG thread once, the Miscellanous Guitar questions topic once, and that's about fucking it. Im sure many of you may be different, but not too different, looking at the last post date in each of those sticky's.

So there's a limit to where convienience becomes inconvienient.

Edit: Oh.. an no way im trusting Bestguitarparts.com... I mean... it's a pale yellow screen! music123 all the way... right...?...

Edit2: So yeah the Paf7 is on music123 for $10 less than bestguitarparts...

link: http://www.music123.com/DiMarzio-PAF7-i157490.music

But.. there's no Paf PRO for 7 strings? Just Paf's... is the Paf Pro much better... ? Oh well.. just wondering. And im also wondering, whether Mr. Holland tried to lead me into paying more for the pickup? If so, you barstard, if not, my mistake. But seriously.. music123 is better... ass.
