No, he talks about that in Food of the Gods, which is probably my favorite (non-fiction) out of all the books I've read. He definitely has some sweet theories, and ideas regarding the future state of things. |

I'm reading Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinland. Tis Science Fiction, but not the over the top nerdy kind. I've read Dune as well and am looking for more good science fiction without there being over the top gay shit (like star wars/star trek books. fuck that).

just received my copy of an out of print book called "the tarantula" by w.j. baerg. its basically a much more advanced version of those "guide to keeping a tarantula" books. more detail on biology and behavior etc. not very many pictures at all..just information. haven't started reading it yet because i'm still in the middle of reading one of the best spider books i know off..."the biology of spiders" by rainer foelix. its a tough read though...i'll definitely be reading it again so that everything sinks in.

(finally) started on Houllebecq. The opening 'scene' is fantastic, an unemotional, very precise and accurate description of a 'happy retirement'-party, at which the people visiting the party àre only visiting the party because they're invited.
You should know the feeling, you're going out with some people or something, and you feel (and even worse: you know the others feel it aswell) that it really is sub-par to your expectations. Brilliant.

We've been reading Lord Of The Flies by William Golding in English class. It's really good. His style is so frigging articulate and the book has some great insight on the true nature of humanity.

i'm currently reading an out of print book called the tarantula by william j. baerg. i guess he was one of the first americans to seriously study tarantulas and compile a book with the most "up to date" information. reading it now...just about 50 years later, i can recognize info that has since been updated, but its a great read as it is. with the limited funding in the area of study...its no surprise that tarantula taxonomy is such a mess and scientific names have changed a lot. it wasn't just that though...a few of his observations (he did note that at times they were limited observations) are in obvious contrast with what is now considered common knowledge of these little "furry" bastards. (insert nerd smiley face here)

It would be best if you didn't read the Wikipedia page first, but honestly the 'surprises' in the book aren't plot-based; or, if they are, it's only because the plot situates the situation. So I'd recommend reading it.

All poorly written. All great nevertheless. He really does belong in a class with Pynchon, Borges, Kafka, Calvino, and them, even though he's not as polished as any of the others.
Also read Ask the Dust, which is something like a polished Bukowski and so much rawer and better than the film, which was just a love story using some of the book's characters, that everybody involved in the film should be ashamed. Seriously. And am now midway through The Deptford Trilogy. Fifth Business was quite good, and with about 100 pages left of The Manticore it's promising to be similarly good. Doubt I'll have much of a chance to read over the coming week or so, but it's real good to have had the opportunity so far. Once I'm done with this, all my languishing big novels are getting their chance.

I'm currently reading The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs. This dude read all of the Encyclopedia Britannicas and wrote a book about his accomplishment . Rather humorous. I'm enjoying it so far. I'm to the letter 'E.'

I love alien abduction books, haven't read one in a while. Strieber is the best, even tho I don't believe any of it in the slightest.
edit: for some reason I'm reading Hamlet.....real slow. Someone gave me a few of Shakespeare's plays in novel form. It's incredibly hard for me to understand and sometimes I feel ripped off when I figure out whats being said in about half a page is something pretty basic.
I been getting more into reading books that really capture the language used at the time of when the novel takes place(Victorian English, cowboy slang, New England Quaker-speak from Moby Dick,etc) or had been written at the time in such a manner of speech with old school vocabulary/slang. Shakespeare is even a little too much, it's obviously very ornamental and poetic and not accurate to the English used at the time, but I still like the yoda-speak, backwards sentences and the slang words that I don't think anyone really fully understands.
beyond that I haven't been reading much.

Just finished "Die Trying" by Lee Child, and I just started another book by him called "The Enemy." Great suspense author. I'm not big on reading, but I get hooked reading these.

cool, that one is good. i like all of his books really ..well the ones i have read. still have to finish after many a summer dies the swan.

Just read Middlesex, which I'd been meaning to get to for around a year now. Great fucking book, way better than I originally expected given the premise, and still living up to the expectations I had when I learned a little more about Eugenides as a writer.
And now I'm a little past halfway through The Prestige, which is basically a cool idea waiting to be re-worked into a movie by Christopher Nolan. There's all sorts of cool stuff to it, but the author's not up to executing it any way other than clumsily.

The Prestige the book is nowhere near as good as the film. It's got more stuff in it, but Nolan's a much better writer than Priest.

Interesting note, Lermontov died in a duel..........This was back in the day when this sort of thing was pretty popular. It's not like what you would typically see in films tho.........the shooters would go one at a time and I believe they were using matchlock pistols at this time.......not revolvers, no Mexican stand-offs at high noon.

I bought this today, the owner of the bookstore asked if I had seen Apocalypse Now, I told him about the Herzog film "Aguirre" ..........both are inspired by this book.
So what I've been doing is going thru this high school/college book "Literature of the western world" and picking out some authors who are featured. It's working out pretty good for getting into different stuff, the kind of books I wouldn't usually go for.
