Playing live
I use a metro but no one in the audience can tell. I still connect with the audience and do a lot of jumping around and headbanging. It seems to make the audience happy with the results.

thats a pretty bad thing i guess.
real live music is communicating, interpretating etc. if someone fucks up everyone has to be able to get in line with the rest again.
maybe just for the drummers when they have a harddisk with keyboard parts or samples.

The best thing you can do to get over that is find a free jazz improv band and play live shows with them unrehearsed.

Dude, get rid of that metronome, and get a better drummer. Thats just not helping anyone.
Besides, if you're always perfectly in time, and it's all like how you sound on CD, whats the point in anyone seeing you live? Using a metronome is going to strip you of a lot of energy. And excitement.

Some of my band's songs are purposely slower to add contrast, but if and when we ever start giging, we'll purposely play everything at the same top notch speed.  And down pick every note possible.

Yeah, cause I headbang while I do, and I can't really "Jump" (haha ) like VanHalen in a dorm room, so I just walk back and forth....haha a couple days ago I was jumping up and down on my bed, with my pants down and my roommate came in when I wasn't looking, hahaha.

I do as of yet not know how I play live, since I'm debuting this summer. But if rehearsel is anything to go by, I'll do a pretty serious attempt at combining guitar playing with break dance. Hell, it's the drummer's JOB to hold the rythm; let him or her do what it is supposedly good at.
The real trick, as already stated, is to have the rythm in your blood; basically you should be able to keep a certain tempo and pulse alone. Well, at least approximately. As I said, even drummers have a purpose.

I headbang, and move around. Basiclly, I just play guitar. All my solos are improvised, because I find it gives them more feeling.

Nah, not conceited... it's just that I've been offered a place in a band, and the first gig I have with them is this summer. 3d guitarist, mainly rythm to free the other two for more solo and stuff... there, that should be a big enough dent in my self satisfied smirk!
