Exclamation Heavy bands in standard tuning???

Alright... I was used to listening to bands that play all in drop-d drop-c, drop-c#, drop-b, etc etc . A couple of years ago I got into the Dillinger Escape Plan, and I realised that they play all in standard tuning, but are heavy and chaotic as hell .

Are there any other metal bands that play in Standard Tuning??????

We've had loads of topics dedicated to Bands That Tune Standard, but not 'Heavy' bands that do it. Not saying you can't be heavy in standard, but the first thing most bands do who are concerned with sounding heavy normally is to use a baritone tuning of some sort.

YES...there are! One that I particulary know of are Astral Gates. Their a canadian band and I'm not even sure if their still together, however they tune to standard, and are one of my favorite bands.

Think "Viking, Power metal, Thrash" fucking badass...

Check out this page http://www.astralgates.com/pages/media.html

They have a vid where their playing "Seven Pilgrams of Madness"...pretty badass stuff.

Most black metal and 80's heavy metal and thrash use standard. Go listen to some Sodom, grab "Persecution Mania". Brutal thrash all in standard

what he said...

Power metal, thrash, viking metal, black metal, math metal, noise metal TONS of hardcore band (old ones at least) tune to standard a lot.

I tune to standard too. BUT I also play a lot of power metal and thrash, but not the corny power metal, more along the lines of Astral Gates and Shred of Hope (local virginia band that used to play..they broke up though and good luck finding their stuff on the net, you'd be better off ordering a cd, I can almost gurentee you'll like them. They we're HUGE in my neck of the woods for the small time they we're together.) that used to play here and those are huge infulences for me.

Those aren't heavy metal? Wow.....

My opinion: Opeth are fucking heavy. I first thought that they de-tuned when I first listened to them.

Okay... I agree with Astral Gates. I like em. And so older hardcore bands?

I dont really think Priest, Maiden, and Black Sabbath are what I was thinking when I thought of Heavy Metal.

But Cynic? Athiest? Ill give them a spin...

Well technically speaking all those bands are "Heavy metal." Granted heavy means something completely different than it does now. But that genre is pretty set in stone. (or at least in my eyes, and half the world haha) Judas priest can be pretty "heavy." I mean come on.. Painkiller. Rockin song. period. The death cover is good.. But the original is damn good too. Even if the solo is fucking like 4 minutes hha

Haha.. yeah I know. Its just that music is becoming so varied. I really do hate genres. How about just two or three genres. Heavy, Pop, and the Hip-Hop-Rap-R&B-Crap. Any of it can be mainstream, any of it can be underground. Im just tired of trying to figure out what music is what. anyway, thanks guys for all those bands. Im really digging cynic. Crazy stuff.

Quo Vadis play in standard and Martyr, although 4 songs from warp zone are standard drop D. Of course most older metal from the 80's early 90's.

Gates of Ishtar also play in standard on their "Dawn of Flame" album, some of their others are tuned down a step to DGCFAD

Dunno if anyone said this, but early Sepultura.

If you ask me, any band who plays 7 strings in B are still using standard tuning, they just have access to more range.

you tend to forget about the early stuff with the new crap they have put out in recent years. I don't know what they tune to these days either, but it's probably Drop C or something.

CC up untill Vile used Eb.
Slayer, E on Shopw No Mercy, then Eb untill Diabolus
Atheist, E
Opeth, E on Blackwater Park, Deliverence and Damnation. I think pre-BW they were drop D, and GR is D standard.
Possesed, E (?)
Pantera, E1/4b on Cowboys. Ya, a quarter Step Down.
Megadeth, E
Morbid Angel, E Untill a sertain point
Martyr, E on Hopeless Hope and a bit on Warp Zone.

Thats all I can think of.

Megadeth's 'Peace Sells...' is 1/4 of a step down too.
'Youthansia' is Eb or D, I can't remember.

Morbid Angel were always Eb not E, until they went 7 string which were still a half step down.
