help with volume

I have a peavey 60/60 but it wasnt very loud, and then it died on me, so im unsure on what I need for my band rehersals. I dont want overkill but im on limited fundage for now so im wondering if a engl 620 - engl 920/50 will produce the volume I need through a 4x12. I could buy a blue voodoo 60 but I havnt played one of these and a guy I asked said it probably wouldnt cut it for metal so at the moment im in a bind, any help appreciated! thanks.

Yea those engl's will do fine. My mesa 20/20 stereo 1u poweramp has enough power to easily be heard over drums with one 4x12.

you probably had really old tubes, or maybe even a couple blown tubes.

Maybe a bit dumb, but couldn't it be that you didn't have enough outgoing volume from the preamp? I can't imagine it not being loud enough

I would have that 60/60 worked on. Those things can definitely do what you want them to, its just that tube amps are like cars. They need fixing every now and then.
