I haven't really liked Tool since Lateralus let me down. I'll give it a shot though.

That Tool song is..intresting. Sounds kinda like they somehow merged APC's Mer de Noms and Lateralus.

That Anathema song isn't that good. Sounds too much like Coldplay. But then again, they have been a tad bit boring after Alternative 4

I got to listen to Vicarious. At first I thought it was "so so", but after a few listens it grew on me. It definatly has a Lateralus feel to it but it retains its own identity. It is difficult to judge Tool's progression from one song out of context. Maynard's vocals are a bit different which struck me. The chorus is great (espeically at 6:40). I'll be able to hear more new material when I see them on the 31st.

Vicarious sounds like Schism to me. The new Anathema is a bit "happy," which is unwonted. Hopefully Anathema will find a record label soon.

The new Tool single is pretty good, I listened to the radio for hours just to hear it.

Get this!

They spent a whole year recording a decoy album to leak out before the release date, so what I have isn't even the real album. It kicks major ass though so I'm kinda upset, I hope they release both albums.

I looked around for something about that and find nothing. Although I did find that it DID leak. I also came across a review from the dude who runs toolshed.down.net. I can't wait!

10,000 Days, 1 Word - Outstanding.

Wow. Five years later, a new Tool record, about to be let out of its cage.

I had the extremely good fortune to hear the new record tonight, April 14th, thanks to a good friend who I will leave anonymous. I'm going to do my best to not include any/many "spoilers" that will ruin your experience of hearing "10,000 Days" for the first time yourself. That said, if you read this, be warned you might find out more than you want to. I'm also going to try my best not to make this too much of a "the record is good / bad" sort of review, because I think we've all seen those already.

I'll do my best to leave it experiential. Hopefully I will succeed.

It has been about six hours since I heard it, and I was much more interested in feeling it than in writing it down; plus the clandestine location wasn't the sort of place you take notes. So when I get lyrics slightly wrong, I hope you'll forgive me. Also, out of respect for the band, I will be a little vague at times. You know, about not biting the hand that feeds you, etc.

Also, I want you all to know, especially those of you who waited up late, that I'm sorry if I created an artificially high expectation by posting that I would have "some info" tonight. At least we broke the record for simultaneous users on the forums. (And I got to see lots of people say lots of extremely impolite things about me. Good work, folks.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there I was, at a listening party ostensibly designed, very graciously, and at essentially no notice, for one. And then, in our hilariously clandestine "relocateable listening booth", the CD started.

The album does not wait. Unlike the past four Tool records ("Opiate", "Undertow", "Ænima", "Lateralus"), this one does not feature white space at the top. "Vicarious" hits you immediately. I am pretty sure that everyone is going to think it is entirely outstanding, a perfect way to get back into Tool. It seemed to be in 10/4, and for that and other reasons reminded me of "The Grudge." I'm sure radio will try to cut it down, but do not give in to them. This is one of the best tracks I've heard in a long long time.

All we have heard about guitars being more out in front and vocals a little subdued has been accurate. Guitar is the dominant sound through much of the record, but this is only when it is in full force; the record does get quiet quite often, and all four players are definitely playing an equal role.

As track 1 ended I relaxed a little, and actually laughed because I was so excited. I hadn't finished a quick chuckle before "Jambi" started, and I was so completely taken aback by how fantastic "Vicarious" is that I could not absorb or remember a thing about "Jambi" except that I liked it. Sorry.

"Wings for Marie" is really incredible. I was struck by the thought that it picks up right where "Reflection" left off. My host graciously explained to me, as it tailed off, that "that was part 1, this is part 2" -- and then turned the bass down a little because it was getting deeper. "10,000 Days" was also incredible. They remind of "Third Eye", "No Quarter", "Reflection", but in an entirely more intricate way. Ten years ago we all thought "Third Eye" was really really intense. I am pretty sure these two will rewrite your expectations of future epics.

By the way, one line posted among a snippet of leaked lyrics was "10,000 days in the fire is long enough." I don't want to ruin your fun, so I will say just this - the meaning of "10,000 Days" was immediately clear to me, especially from the line which follows that line. (I did cheat later and confirm by doing a little math, but I remain convinced.)

Now, up until this point the record felt like what I was expecting. Layered, intense, a straight progression from its forebears. Track 5, "The Pot", was not what I was expecting. Vocals here start off by taking a different approach than previous albums, but mainly only at the beginning. After the initial "what the..." it became like an old friend who had just walked in wearing something totally unexpected. Perhaps the best way to sum this up is to say that if you liked "Hooker with a Penis", you will like this song a lot as well. And yes, the title accurately reflects the subject matter.

To this point, I had noticed many little sprinkles from previous albums, callbacks to other themes and other progressions, perhaps tying these new tracks sonically and thematically to their older siblings. I continued to notice them throughout the record. Allusions to various songs kept appearing, though I rapidly lost track of where they all were. It will be fun to go through again and hear them, before you stop thinking of them as allusions to old songs and start thinking of them as parts of new ones.

"Lipan Conjuring", as you have all probably guessed from it's length (approx. one minute), is a segue. "Mantra" with spoons.

Interestingly, "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" is also a segue of sorts, though it's three minutes or so long. Vaguely "Faaip de Oiad"-like. An instrumental soundscape with a long dialogue sample (from a movie?) buried within. The doctor, the patient, the visitor, all interacting.

"Rosetta Stoned" really took me on a ride. From what I recall, it sort of blended out of the previous track, and out of nowhere there were machine-gun-style vocals. Very percussive, snarly, distorted. For the first time, I started to think "hey there seem to be explicit lyrics here." Sudafed? Sunkist? Other S words? I think fans of Tool's earlier work will be into this one also. After one listen, I felt it to be simultaneously plainspoken and full of depth, simultaneously smooth and rough. I felt like parts of it likened to "H." but in a much faster way. I was really moved.

After that, it was hard to retain much about "Intension." Sorry.

But I think the flame becomes the fire.

"Right in Two" was one of my favorites. And not just all the monkey references. Lots of fantastically frenetic building. Great melodies. Oh and it was in 11, for much of the time anyway. "Cutting our love ..."

And so, it was time for "Viginti Tres." But my host was running late for dinner, and I was as well. It's another segue, I was told. I'll hear it soon, I said. We left the ... booth.

The guitars sound really sharp and loud. The bass sounds fantastically punchy, and sometime sounds like it does in the opening seconds of "Forty-Six & 2." Drums keep on trying new things, new instrumentations, new voices, new synths even; and keep on sounding incredible. Vocals seem to be pulled down a little overall, but this does add an element of "Undertow"-esque "what is he saying" fun.

I do think this album may not be one you just put on and rock out to. It's a much more satisfying meal than a snack. The downside of that is that it may not be as tailgate-worthy as "Opiate"; but that is probably the upside too. I think you will all find it immediately very striking, and you will all be pretty happy with it after one listen. But I do think that while you will definitely fall in love with it, it will take many people a little while to really get there.

I, however, loved it immediately. I can't believe I have to wait 19 days to hear it again.

You will want to buy this the day it comes out. Trust me. It may not be exactly what you are expecting, but it is exactly what you are waiting for.

I've been a Tool fan all my life, and I can't say I like 10,000 days much. After two listens I've gotten extremely bored of the album.

I'd rather listen to other stuff too, seeing how Tool gets way too much felacio from the press.

I read the interview with Adam in guitar world...and he mentioned his love of meshuggah....

I am very excited about this new album personally...I've been re-familiarizing myself with the catalog recently to prepare for it.

I still think Aenima is their best album but 10,000 Days is killer. Its starting to grow on me more. The instrumentation and bass are amazing. I've always wanted to see these guys live, they're playing a bunch of smaller venues that are sold out, hopefully they'll get bigger after they come back from Europe.

Opiate and Undertow any day. Aenima was good. Lateralus was predicatable 'heavy, soft, heavy, soft, soft soft soft, heavy, soft, soft, heavy, soft, heavy, soft, heavy, soft, heavy, soft...."

I heard the new album in the shop and thought man these guys are resting on their laurels. I know a CD shop isn't the best place to experience the CD of course but, it sounded like Lateralus. Boring boring borinbbogmbntgbrib nrgboirgnbon

Lol that worked. As if a band would record a whole album with intention to let it leak as a smokescreen. That would be really cool though.

OK...now I'm fucking lost. If this album that was released is the "Decoy", where is the album people all over the internet are saying was leaked and is fucking amazing?

Personally, I am still undecided on this album...I think it just needs to grow on you.

However, it would be very entertaining if this album really is a decoy...and they release another further on down the road....that would probably be very difficult though I am sure.

Can someone shed some light god dammit?

Just finished the album, its pretty good. I imagine that its going to fly right past alot of fans and for those of you that hear it, you'll understand why. It seems like to really enjoy this album you're going to have to do more than observe the surface (which so many fans do).

If you can figure out how to use the stereoscoptic lenses the album comes with the artwork will BLOW YOUR FUCKING MIND. And if not, I'll just blow you.

I slept on this album last night (literally slept for 3-4 hours and let it play on random) that was very interesting to say the least.

After that it had me up until 3 in the morning....but I feel I am just scratching the surface with it...there are so many textures and layers to this album...and it all sounds so interesting to me.

Only thing I don't really like is the vocal intro to "The Pot", other than that...this album is VERY intriguing.

It comes as no surprise that a lot of fans want to dog it out and say it sucks from the first listen...how very typical.

If you want a "heavy" album, listen to some death metal....Tool have never been categorized as a certain type of band...and definitely not as a heavy metal band.

They have always been experimental, and this album is merely another part of their evolution.

Maybe one day when you kiddies grow out of your shells and appreciate music for more than just sweeps and low tunings, you will understand.

Tool fan for the past 11 years of my life.
And this album is now my favorite album from them.

We got tickets to the Philadelphia show.
Went on sale at 10am, sold out by 10:02.
We've got two tickets.
Suck MY balls.

Metalheads usually don't understand Tool, or choose to ignore them and shrug them off. Thats your choice, but "10,000 Days" is incredible.

I've had it for a few weeks (couldn't resist the leak ). Bought it today though.

It was pulled from Toolband.com, the official site.

To rephrase myself earlier : To me its stupid to tell everyone that '10,000 Days' is a decoy, and that the real album has been in the works for three years, and then on the 'real album' release date, 10,000 days is the 'real' album. Normally whenever Tool pulls a stunt it turns out to be something brilliant and hilarious, but I don't think they've made anyone feel stupid for downloading the leak and thinking they've gotten the real deal, if they really did get the album.

The album is very good though.

Tool has put out rumors that it has broken up, Maynard has DIED, and a shitload of other funny stuff. It was probably just Blair being and asshole.

Cause Blair is the reason I refuse to visit Toolband anymore.

Yeah, Blair is an annoying twat that treats Toolband like a blog.

The best was Maynard claiming he'd found Jesus.

i'll agree though, Lateralus was a low(er) point for the band....10,000 days is growing on me though.

Why is that every person who doesen't care for a Tool album "doesn't get it"? Is it so unconceivable that perheps a Tool album doesent appeal to everyone, and that what might appear as genius to some might be boring and uninteresting to others? And no, I am not someone who needs fucking blastbeats throughout an entire record. I listen to everything from Origin to Eluvium to the fucking Goo Goo Dolls. So, instead of making riduculous genralizations about how any metalhead who doesen't like the new Tool album is obviously an idiot who can't handle a guitar that isn't tuned to B, perheps we should be a little more accepting to those who don't care for Tool. Somehow I doubt that will happen. And I still think this new album is extrememely lame. Mediocre ambient mixed in with decent rocking parts that stretches out for way too long. Really, it's not neccesary to make every album 78 minutes long. But hey, if you dig it, awesome. The packaging is sweet too, I almost want to buy it just for that.

Dont get so offended that someone doesnt like a band that you like.

You will actually find that Tool are a very popular band. So relax,

Wow, I never said anything about that. All I said was that the majority of metalheads who don't like them don't "understand" their music. I didn't make any generalizations about everyone who can't stand Tool is some dipshit who enjoys chugging riffs and beer.

And accepting? I did point out that it was your god-given will to not like them. I specifically said "thats your choice" if you don't like it.

But here's a broad generalization for you to get upset with:

"Metalheads are generally of lower intellect, and their reading comprehension is substandard."

Oh wait, you just proved that.

I'm not going to believe it till I hear it. I've searched Soulseek repeatedly and another friend has looked into other sources. I haven't heard anything about it except whats been posted here. I could be wrong, but I doubt they'd go so far. Zionist tells me he's going to send me a decoy "Vicarious" song. Releasing a false single might be more reasonable.

Whats not to understand about Tool? There are for more complex and harder-to-understand bands out there. Anyone who dosn't like them dosn't for that reason - they simply don't. Tool are mainstream people.

I don't think there's any decoy tool album that was released; but the artwork in the 10,000 days packaging is amazing and worthwile on its own to buy the c.d.

He's not asking for clarification, he's stating his opinion. Just because you don't agree with his opinion does not mean that he has misunderstood you.

...there is a big difference between sarcasm and being pissed.

I thought it would be hilarious to make myself one, so I did. But apparently we don't have a sense of humor around here.

Drama Queen? All I said was "i've already explained it" and thats being a drama queen? Fuck you people are dense.

9 days till I see them live.
Everyone have a vote for your favorite track from the album?

I'm going for "10,000 Days (Wings Part II)" or "The Pot."

Guess I'm a loner here. My favorites at the moment are Vicarious, Rosetta Stoned, and Intension. Every other track is definatly good, but these stick out the most as of now. I've only had time to listen through a few times.

Any thoughts on exactly what "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" could be about? I'm positive they're refering to Albert Hofman, but what the title indicates or the conversastion with the doctor is a mystery to me.

EDIT: The Toolshed put out the lyrics for 10,000 days, but they're not official (transcribed my listeners). It seems that Lost Keys is the intro to Rosetta Stoned (which looks to be about some kind of alien abduction?), as it lyrically picks right up where Lost Keys stopped.
