I don't think this thread has been done before, I searched a little and came up with nothing. Happily point me to a thread if I have overlooked it.

Anyway, so there aren't many death metal bands using 7 string guitars, well that is, that I know of, so maybe you guys can point me to some good ones?

I would prefer bands that utilize the whole 7 string vocabulary, not just riff on the top 2 strings, like sadly too many bands we know.

At the moment I only know 3 death metal bands using 7's, that being Beneath The Massacre, Spawn of Possesion, and Carphanaum.

I might add that bands that use 7 string guitars in standard tuning would be most helpful, seeing as I tried unsuccessfully to tune my 7 string down one step, wasting 2 hours of my life.

NOTE: You may have noticed that I kept restating 'death metal bands'. This is so I don't get a select group of people saying "KoRn.. Haha11 lolzzk J/K".

Emperor (not really death metal) uses 7 strings in some songs (or maybe all songs) on Prometheus

Cannibal Corpse are meh. I don't own anything after Tomb of the Mutilated. Don't tell me im missing out, im not. Theyre solid and all, but kinda like Macabre... missing oompfs of creative zing. Just my $0.02

In FF's (brutal) death days, it was 6 strings. They picked up 7's on the Obsolete when they also decided to detune a major 2nd to A.

SOME Nile songs make more sense if arranged for 7 strings in A standard, like Unas Slayer Of The Gods, but I think they stick to 6's tuned to drop A. John Mansley gave me a tab for Unas... in A standard and it works really well.

Cryptopsy uses 6 strings tuned down to B, i think, so you can play that on 7.
I'm pretty sure Immolation uses 7 strings. That's all i can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Yeah so anyway, I look at a Macabre tab, I look at a Spawn of Possesion tab.. Theyre's a difference. Just saying its not really music I wanna be playing. Just saying I wanna be playing really technical music. So not really gonna bother with Macabre.

People saying just play 6 string songs... Duh! Thats what us 7 string players do.. its more convienient... going from Cryptopsy to Metallica very efficiently. But I created this thread so I could learn more songs that encompass the whole 7 string range...So quit your pointlessness .

I use 7 string in my band but I use it for a extra high string instead of the low B string. Im getting another to do the low B string though. We tune to C standard tunning. I use the extra high string for soloing which I have to write more solos on our new stuff. Our old stuff only has one solo.

Emperor has some good fun stuff to play on Prometheus for 7-string, I almost exclusivly play Emperor on my 7. There's a couple of Cannibal Corpse ones with 7-strings but imo they aren't all that good.

And ya, Cryptopsy can be played on 7 string. Ask Cloaca. I think you'd have to tune the G to F# to get the same thing while playing WS and ATYB material when they do that pick hammer-on, slide thing. (Last riffs on Loathe, I dont know what that technique is called)

If you wanna use the 7 string as a 6 string tuned to B you just drop the 3rd string G a half step to F# and ignore the high E.

Yeah you have to tune your G string down to an F#. Although that pick slide on Loathe is actually done on the high B string.

Yeah, my first 6 strings are like a normal 6 string tuned to C standard tunning and then I use the high A string that is tuned to F. My string gauge is a 9-52. You can do a few different things with a 7 string and do all kinds of alternate tunnings!

There was a local (read:underground, lol) band who used 7 strings called Cryers Diary, they were pretty damm good although there singer wasn't the best aspect of the band.
