Amp Micing
Hey. I just wanted to know what kinds of mics you guys use to mic your amps. I'm not too familiar with what each mic sounds like yet, so I just wanted some input.
What kinds of mics do you use?
How many?
Placement?
What it sounds like? (creamy, punchy, boomy, warm, bright...)
Thanks!

I am certain most of us noobies will be satisfied with just about any decent mic (sm57) close miced to the center of the cone and doubletracked 75%left/right .. it actually sounds pretty nice

Edge of the cone more like it. The center sounds terrible.

On its own it sounds a little treblish, try again doubletracking, adding drums, bass, the center will be perfect

I normally do Hard right/left on the close mics and 75% right/left on the ambient mics. I'll try your idea though. Seems like it might sound good.
Thanks

Are you quad tracking?
You seem a bit more pro than me and my idea however

Lots of mids and highs. Whenever i would remotely come off the edge of the cone, it sounds like it removes life from the sound. But thats me.
I have tried all sorts of different pannings. Lately i like the 25% on each side. But i'm sure i'll fade back to 75% like usual. I also typically highly differ the eq of the guitars on the different channels. I usually will make my rhythm guitar take alot of mids, while the lead i'll cut mids and do a tiny boost in upper highs.
I would say on average, i probably record 35-40% of the time i play an instrument.

would a kick drum mic be better for my bass amp,
and would micing the horn be good?

Whats intresting about that. I've heard of a kickdrum mic being used before. I read it somewhere. And i'm sure miking the horn would make instresting results. I think if you did a line out, mic the horn and speaker you would probably be able to get the most flexable adjustable recording ever for bass. Although it probably would be overally not needed.
Using the recording of a miked horn would be good probably if you lowered the levels throughout most of the recording, then.. say.. a part that the bass might need to be emphasised.. or heard a lil better, come up in volumes from the horn. That would be something i would try.

You could record both on different tracks and experiment

I read on some site about recording a bass amp. It said to do line out for the majority of the sound with a mic covering the upper mids and highs.
