Back on subject, Les Pauls are generally stop-bar tailpiece only, I have not seen many stringthroughs, and the only I've seen are shitty no-name copies. Get a Tokai or Takamine copy or something, or check out the Agile copies at Rondomusic.

Fuck the Agiles, you'd only be getting one if you're low as hell on budget, and looking for something to just fuck around with. For LP style guitars, check out Edwards which makes great LP copies for like $800, or check out ESP/LTD Eclipse.

It's because there's too many guys who are too close minded that they'd only play thin-bodied neck-thru guitars w/ thin ass necks and w/ EMG's.......
Note: That's not really directed at anyone on this forum. ^^

I don't like LP's, cause I don't like set necks nor necks that are painted/finished. I also don't like thick necks. Les Pauls are not very versatile IMO.

Its like saying im not gonna drive that Mustang Saleen.... I'll ONLY drive Ferrari (because of the name, of course).
I use both types of guitar and they're each good for different reasons.

if you want something in the $800 range... kinda looks like an LP... plays like an LP, and has a better heel joint imo... check out the eastwood GP... i have one... its dead sexy... needs different pickups thouhg, but fuck, so do les pauls to make them metal. OR you could get a gibson les paul menace with the high gain pickups already built in.

I want a les paul, totally sexy guitars, fuckin awesome crunch. I really gotta go have a play though, i like slightly thicker necks, but i gotta see if my little fingers will reach :P
There are a few copies I have looked at. I think my fav so far was an Ibanez copy of an LP custom Though i would rather get something newer.
What are the Epiphones like? Yes, quite possibly they are the same quality as some of the other copies but cost a fuckload more. But when it comes to availablility theres just so much more range for me if i consider Epiphones.

Les pauls have a highly original tone for one. And 2 they have a hella small neck. I think the set neck is the ONLY way to play a guitar. Bolt ons suck so much, for anything other than its usually squared and not rounded off, effects the feeling of my hand on the upper notes.
On the topic of epiphones i've had an epiphone custom. It wasn't bad for.... a intermediate guitar. But after i got my gibson lespaul standard.... yeah lets say it didn't comepare. I mean 400 bucks.. to a 2400 dollar guitar... no contest. But it wasn't bad at all. I've seen pro bands using epiphone (maybe as a backup, but i've seen it a few times actually)

one of my main (somewhat) guitars right now is my epiphone 7 string. granted I have changed the pickups and the machine heads, but it is a pretty nice guitar for the money.
I guess while you are at it, you can go tell Rob Barret and Rhandy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde that Les Pauls aren't versatile enough or aren't good enough for metal....you stupid cunts.

Im not even a guitar player and Ill agree that a painted/finished neck is alot harder to move around on
I love that rough grainy wood feel
maybe thats cause I'm used to a double bass though

I just prefer a strat -any strat- over an LP really, I don't find them comfortable enough(and strats are generally uncomfy for me too). Obviously I'll take a Gibson over a Squier strat, but I really just don't think LP's are the most versatile guitars in the world...
Meh, I probably hate LP's so much cause I hate Slash and Guns n Roses/90's cock-rock wannabes.
22 frets = teh suck also.

Last time I checked there aren't many strats with 24 frets.....

Yeah, well I'll consider an Epiphone once i get working again and some money. Black with white trim and pickboard
I was looking on Jason Beckers site and he recommended LP's, and so many metal bands do use them. But i really want one for rock and blues.

Now, Now, Now, even on my original post I said that it wasn't really directed at anyone. Now my point is that if LP's are uncomfortable for you, fine, but saying that they're not versatile or not suited for metal....some funny shit. I really don't think LP's have thick necks, it's just that Jacksons/and any similar, have too thin necks. LP necks vary also, you can get the fucking "baseball bat" thickness in the '50s or a slim tapered from the '60s style. And about the versatility: the LP is used by Metal players, Rock, reggae, punk, country, smooth clean stuff, and even Jazz on the rare ocasions, so there's versatility for ya. Also, this has nothing to do w/ LP's, but one thing that annoys the hell outta me is when people get like reg type guitars like Soloists, LP's, and play it sitting down in like a "V" style, kinda like what Rusty Cooley does. I don't know why but that annoys the hell outta me, just sit w/ it normal on your lap. Rant completed.

I obviously meant superstrat, cunt. Most Ibanez, many Kramers, Schecters, and a few others have 24 frets.
I guess I was wrong about the versatility thing, but I'd still take a super strat over an LP because of personal preferance. But I still think Gibson LP's are overrated. I know 3 previous Gibson owners that all claim they need to learn some quality control, they were pissed because they payed so much for a pretty average instrument, paying more for the brand name than actual workmanship.
The only 2 people I know that own a Gibson LP right now are pretty young, and does not hurt to mention they claim that "only Marshalls and Gibsons count". It's probably the overhyped bullshit everyone says about LP's that pisses me off more than the actual guitar. And there is no guitarist I actually care about that uses an LP too, and yes that does matter to me.
Not hitting on your guitars so don't take it the wrong way, my subjectivity just gets way too much in the way.

I have the same as Phil, lovely guitar, love the 7-string LP neck, fits in my hand just right!
Epi's are pretty good, but obviously will never compare to a Gibson.

Somehow I knew this would degenerate into a discussion on whether or not the use of a Paul is ethical.
If you plug it in, and it :
1. Sounds good
2. Feels good
Then damn who else uses it or what kind of reputation it has.
I looked up and down, and I was sure that SOMEONE had to make a decent string-thru Paul, I found none. You could do what Zakk Wylde does : Almost all Pauls have a stop tailpiece, and most people just have the ball end at the end of the piece as it was designed. Zakk loops the end of the string that is attached to the tuners through the ball end, so that the strings are essentially wrapped around the stop tailpiece before they reach the tun-o-matic bridge. This is supposed to give it more-even string tension and greater sustain, which is what you'd be looking for with a string-through Paul.

I've tried that method with mine before. I don't see how anyone can say they won't get enough sustain in doing it the normal fashion. When I did it Zakk's way I found the action to be lower and looser.

I prefer heavy guitars, for me they feel nicer, plus then the neck doesn't end up at your knees when you let go of it while standing up.

i had one of those gibson les paul specials and liked it quite a bit. the neck was thinner than the normal ones, and best of all it wasn't painted.. just a very satiny oil finish on the back of the neck (same w/the rest of the guitar actually). if it had a carved top, it would've been the perfect les paul for me. i hated the flat top, though, so i got rid of it. although they were the lower-end gibson LP, they were actually quite nice in several respects for shredding.

the hype is in the fat tone.. not everybody sticks to the EMG tone, which doesn't let the sound of the wood come through compared to passives.

i agree. the shape of the guitar doesnt determine the sound, the wood and p/u's do. i mean if u don't like the neck thats fine but it doesnt mean it sucks for everyone. i have a esp eclipse and i love it. i've never felt i couldnt play as fast on it as say my ibanez. and i really do think they have some of the best sustain out of a lotta guitars out there.

Heheh, my LP 7-string isn't neck-heavy at all. If I let go of it while stood up it stays in the same position, my Jackson V however IS neck heavy. I just like guitars with heavy bodies, I know some people have a problem with them making their backs ache etc... but I prefer them, they just sit in the strap nicer.

Fuck, I can't use a neck heavy guitar, they shit me when standing up, so I hape I can find one without a heavy head/neck. However I havn't used a neck heavy guitar since I started playing like a jazz fag [really really high strap] so it might not matter that much.

actually to add in. Without even putting in my knowledge of les pauls lets look at the design. The length of hte neck is short. And it has a big ass heavy body. How on earth can it possibly be neck heavy?
If the les paul sat uneven it would have never gotten anywhere in the first place.
Yeah their heavy. I tell you what its a durable ass guitar haha. I've nocked mini a things , my friends, and even myself with it. And boy does it fucking hurt... hah
Finishing this up in stone, the les paul is a balanced, heavy (in comparison to strats or super strats or whatever you want to call them) guitar.

Pfft, my supposedly alder-bodied Jackson weighs a fucking ton and it does not hit the floor when I let go of it(after replacing straploks of course), this was not the case with the only LP I've layed hands on: a LP special(cherry-like finish, black pickguard, gold pickups).
