Melodic Minor

Alright, I didn't want to hijack the guy below me's thread, because mine is similar, though I tried following up on some of the advice given in it and really tried exploring part of this scale. It's definately "melodic" sounding.

Here are a few riffs or part of a song...or whatever you wanna make of it where I used mostly a slightly improvised Melodic Minor E. I also saw in the other thread to use "pedel tones" or pedel points are what some call them I think. Which I believe is where you repeat a series of certain root notes in a riff. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

How does this go together and have I grouped stuff accordingly or does it just plain suck? If so, what could I do to improve it. Take note that I'm still VERY new at all this theory, but I'm very determined and would definately like to improve my writing abilities. The second riffs we're from the harmonic minor A scale.

Thanks in advance.

I just looked at it. I'm looking through it and i don't see any melodic minor scale what so ever. I mean i could be wrong. But i don't see a E melodic minor, nor do i see this A harmonic minor scale.

The melodic minor scale consists of raising a 6th and 7th interval of a minor scale up a half step. This would be your C and D to C# and D# in an E minor scale. But that scale would only be used on an ascending manner. So if you were descending in notes it would just be the natural pitches. This is definately in the Key of E minor though.

The A harmonic minor scale consists of A B C D E F G#. I don't know where you came up with using this scale but its not in this piece.

You are correct about the pedal tone use though. Thats more or less what is in these riffs.

Now in saying all this. What exactly are you asking about?

Nm i stand corrected. I see the 2nd riff thing you're talking about

Btw. I like how you have darkest hour and locus factor at the top of your band list.

I guess the question is, do they harmonize and flow well together, or are they just really boringly written? I guess I'm just asking for adivce, sorry If I sound vague.

I just check out your band, I'm definately gonna have to see you guys sometime. You sound like you have a lot of darkest hour and (old) black dahlia with some hints of a band I used to love called shred of hope...too bad they quit, but you guys sound really cool. I like the vocals too and I can't say that about too many bands nowadays!

I love Unbalanced Equation and "The Knots", the other two are meh...but overall I really think you guys have potential...good stuff.

*EDIT*....Alright, I just read that its a SOLO project...haha, I feel stupid now. Still some great stuff.

Haha thanks that made my day. You can see us sometime.... Yeah its heavily darkest hour w/ Dark tranquillity, and some black dahlia for sure.

The flow isn't that bad. The riff 2 definately needs breaks in your constant 16th notes, and the parts like right after the main "theme" or riff, like the somewhat of scales, should be shorter. That would definately make it better. It just kinda seems like those parts are just notes placed without much purpose.

I liked the 2nd set of riffs you posted on there. A good continuation of that riff would be changing your "pedal tone" note, to add a progression. But is definately a good start.
