Hm...anyone know any TUBE poweramps around $500?
I've decided I dont like my Peavey classic 60/60....for a few reasons
1) first and foremost, this thing seems to eat up tubes like a fat bitch at a cake eating contest. I just retubed it about 6-7 months ago and it's already bitching at me for new tubes (i'm getting MAJOR volume fluctuations, and while i can stand it for at home practicing, there's not way i can gig with this thing if it keeps doing this)
just so i dont feel like an idiot (which i will inevitably) is having the poweramp volume on 10 all the time and controlling the overall volume from the preamp a bad idea for tube life?
2) The thing is three godamn rackspaces and a good 35-40 pounds. It makes my rack a lot heaveir than it should be, considering my ideal rack is 4 spaces - pre, power, furman, effects (which i might ditch anyway cause i never use 'em...plus my effects processor SUCKS)
So i'm gonna try and sell the peavey + my effects shit for around $500 so i dont have to drop much cash on a new poweramp
What caught my eye is the mesa 20/20. With it, my rig will be a downsized to a little bit more managable level, and i can probablly get more "satoorated toob tone lol" at lower volumes, which i really like. Can these guys be had for $500 or less? are they reliable?
Also, Hx4x685027690543273whatever, you use a 20/20 with a 530 i believe. How's that working out for you? this has nothing to do with my rig's tone, as I love it, but a lot of people say the mesa + 530 go well together (those who've had mesa poweramps + engl pres at least).
Any other poweramps I should look at? I really wanna stay with tubes because i just like the tube tone better than solid state (i know the difference, my engl has a teeny SS poweramp built in which is pretty cool for silent practicing, but it doesnt have the same DUN DUGGA DUN DUN DUN sound to it...)
also 20 watts is giggable right?

I used my 2:90 with my e530 when I had it,and it worked fine. There isnt a great deal of smaller tube poweramps. The best,IMO are Marshall 20/20's,or the Mesa's.A few company's, like ADA made some tube poweramps, always on the used market for under $500.

for $500 you could probably snag a used mesa poweramp like a 50/50, or one of the older ones like the 2/95.

i was checking out the 50/50, it seems pretty damn nice. Switchable to 15 watts too >_> i'm just hoping it's not as much of a heavy bitch as the peavey...plus some presence control and volume control on the FRONT GODDAMN PANEL...god i hate that about the 60/60

I think it is pretty obvious having your volume at 10 all the time kills your powertubes sooner.

It's not having a volume as far as I know, it's having an attenuator before the power-up stage which is called a master volume
edit: take a peavey 5150 as an example, it doesn't have a master volume because there ain't any attenuator at that point, which is the same thing as keeping the master volume at max all the time.. it only has a "post gain" attenuator for adjusting how much of the ovedriven sound to let thru to the powerstage.. a channel volume

You are supposed to change your tubes out every 6 months or so anyways!
