korns bassist has a really sweet (but too simple) sounding bass and i want to adopt a similar sound but im lost on how. ive heard of slapping, and i guess it sounds self explanatory but i dont know how it really works. i also know you have to tune down your bass but can that work on a 4 string bass or does it have to be 5?

dont learn or take influence from munky, he sucks ass
he gets that sound by beating the crap out of his strings and downtuning to C
I reccomend practicing and actually playing notes

I think if you take an old morse code tapper from world war 2 era, hook it up to a microphone with some reverb and tap the shit out of it, it would sound the same. Maybe a bit more musical.

Yeah fieldy just whacks his eq to full bass full treble and has high frequencies all up on his tweeter, downtunes to A (not recommended on a 4 string) and just beats his hand over the strings, its a unique style, but not my thing.

first off, slapping and popping is a style of play developed by some funk/r and b artists from the 70's (check out larry graham, or louis johnson for a better example of what fieldy does), and im sure there are tons of threads about it already so i'd suggest you search the bass forum/internet. as far as his "tone" (or lack there of) i believe they tune to drop A, so his strings are very loose and they get a real floppy, buzzed out sound beacause of this(dude seriously needs to raise the action on his bridge). i definitely wouldnt recommend tuning a 4 string to drop A, it will be ridiculous. if you'd like a solid example of a similar style with MUCH better tone check out mudvayne's bassist, hes pretty solid.

As far as the debate around Fieldy's talents, he's a pretty good bassist. Doesn't mean Korn is good (if this becomes a Korn bashing thread, so help me lucifer, I'm gonna start hacking peoples' balls off), but as an individual he can pull off some pretty decent lines and riffs. As for the tuning, he uses a 5-string and they tune down all strings one full step (Munky and Head use 7-stringers), not a drop-tuning. How do I know this? Don't ask. I'll just use the term "know your enemy".

all you need for korn songs is a low A string and take a drumstick and beat the hell out of it...but amazingly he pulls off his simple albeit unfortunately popular tone. Sometimes he has surprised me with some actually decent lines but then again even a broken clock is right twice a day.

korns bass is unique, but a little boring. i agree he does kinda suck but musically i love it. im looking for a similar sound, but not as repetitive.

He uses a Drop C tuning, he switches between 5 and 4 strings to what album hes is playing, his tone on LD.50 is absolutely indescribable.

I used to be obsessed with his tone on that album. Ive found that a lot of it is fretless overdubs on the regular bass tracks, especially when he plays chords. He played drop B on L.D.50 btw. B,F#,B,E,G#.

Oh yea, and Fieldy is pretty much a joke as fas as bass players are concerned.

Yeah i noticed a few 'mwaaah' bits in Dig and Everything is Nothing, he's using a Pedulla fretless according to one of the interviews i read, its good stuff.

Korn sucks Fieldy sucks. Just coz they play distorted guitars doesnt make them metal, their posers.Korn were just a trend like grunge now their finished.
Best bass player in metal has to be Steve Digiorgio. Other brillant bass players although not strictly metal are John Myung and Shawn Malone. They make fieldy look like a amatuer.METAL IS FOREVER.
