helping a complete noob is fun
alright so i have a band, but we have a problem. im the vocalist. i cant sing at all in my opinion, but others disagree. im just way to soft. it sounds like im whispering to myself when i try to sing. and screaming? im afraid what will happen when i try that out. anyways, were all new at this, but im being put on the spotlight to learn really quick. so does anyone have any advice on were to start? were going for a mudvayne vocalist style mixed with the heavy bass and guitar sounds of korn and with dark lyrics and grunts from lamb of god. apreciate any help.

As for singing you need to get comfortable with your own voice otherwise you'll be hopeless on stage. It's ok to be self conscious about your own voice, but sometimes you just need to go with what others say.. If you still don't think you have.. See a singing teacher at your school or something, see what they say.
When it comes to screaming.. You have to try it out, see what you can produce and then come back here and go to the screaming topic that's been made a sticky. Through out the mass of pages there are loads of tips and techniques that help to create a good scream.. It helped me, so hopefully you'll find it useful also.

Get drunk with your band, get in front of a mic and let it go haha. If you are too self concious to try something, alcohol is a tool to give it the first push.

I am my band's vocalist.
I discovered my voice when I was drunk, and I remember everything when I'm drunk. The next morning I was like, "Whoa!"
Fortunately, it was in front of people who I cannot humiliate myself in front of. I don't know if you have that, fr0g.
Learn to shout and put in effort from your lungs first, would be my advice.
I've got to work on my Cookie Monster voice now. It's a bit quiet, unless it is normally. Sorry if any of you are offended by that term, Cookie Monster, I've heard some are.

ok well i never get drunk but with one energy drink i might as well be called drunk cuz i go bonkers so ill try that out.But sometimes i dont think my voice is matured because it sounds a little different everyday and that becomes a problem.

Apparently cookie monster vocals is a nu-metal freaks way of describing REAL metal vocals. (I think it scares them or something....) A guy i work with says that all the time whenever he hears me listening to my music.

Well if you cant sing (do vocals) then wouldnt that be like someone who's never played guitar before, going and playing for a band? It just doesnt make sense now does it? No. I do suggest getting drunk. I started off doing vocals after getting drunk every night, and me and the ACTUAL vocalist of the band ended up doing half-and-half. I cant sing worth a fuck if im not drunk, but gimme some beer and i'll record a whole fuckin album. Its all about confidence. Your voice is as powerful as your mind will make it.
now the whole point of what i just said, is that once you KNOW you can sing, and be confident about it, then you can do it. Simple as that. If you have to drink your face off for the first year like i did, do it. Worked for me, might or might not for you.

I feel so uncool, having sat down at the piano and simply playing note by note and "sung" along until an approximate untiy between voice and instrument was achieved. And singing ballads with an accoustic at parties, where, granted, some limited amount of alcohol might have slipped in.

Hey frog777 how old are you?. You said somethin' about your voice not being mature. If you don't think your voice is mature wait a couple years or whatever. I wanted to do vocals at 13 but sucked, but at late 14 my voice sounded better and it kept getting better from there on (I'm almost 16 now)
