This person that a friend of mine knows, who cites Cradle Of Filth as being 'as heavy as it can possibly get', showed him my band's demo ( http://www.myspace.com/thehellishinterval ).
Now this is the sort of person that anything within his skill is good, but anything outside of it is noisy, nonsensical, not-complex, and has 'no form or structure'. Lamb Of God would be a tech-fest for him.
He showed him the fast songs off of it, and said this exactly :
"Alright ... alright ... c'mon now ... I mean, what the guitar playing needs is it needs to be more complex ... that's what you need for this kind of music ... and I mean, he has no form! And its fucking sloppy ... I mean, shit ... I mean, c'mon, anyone could do that ... "
So he asks him to play the songs, if its that easy.
"Aw, why would I wanna play THAT shit? C'mon, that's stupid ... "

ONE of the dumbest things said to me about metal was actually from my former drummer. I was saying that bands like Black Sabbath, Exodus, Anthrax and shit like that was much heavier than bands like Chimaira, Slipknot and other modern bands. He said, no they werent, cause modern bands are louder (referring to better production on albums) and that modern bands tune down. Wheni asked him "does this mean that heaviness is equal to equipment instead of skill and heart?" he replied "yes"........

I don't know how widespread it is in the world, but in the country that I have had the double edged fortune of finding myself in, there is an utterly idiotic attitude that is plain to see in the conception that it is more acceptable to become rich trough a lottery ticket than through a succesful enterprise. Not utspoken, NOOO, no one would ever admit it, making the whole thing TRULY pathetic.
Now, with this attitude, it is obvious where the phrase "all you need to do is practice" comes from and what it means.
My teacher in showjazz is a bliss for the eye to behold when she's doing her thing. But hell, all she needed to do was practice. She just practiced for twenty years. Anyone could do that.

You take a bunch of people that never listen to metal, and they'll call it noise. I feel the same way when I listen to stuff like Pig Destroyer, so I understand people saying those things. They're not used to it, and they probably don't want to be used to it.
At the same time, people around here say dumb shit all the time for absolutely no reason. Such as in this thread, which is still just a big metalhead jackoff session of "this guy said metal sucks so i hit him in the face with a shovel and forcefed him a dogshit milkshake and told him BURZUM RULES NOW DON"T THEY ASSHOLE!" sort of shit that makes people think we're a pack of animals.
Personally I would much rather field a question of "How can you listen to this?" than having to hear/see "Metallica sold out! Their only good album was..." 800 times a month.

I have to admit that I myself acquired the taste for that particular vocal style from repeated listening to Devourment, even after already having listened to brutal death metal for years. Inhaled/pig/gutterals/what have you are just completely off the wall even for metal's standards.

Well....yeah. I meant the Hell Awaits-Divine Intervention days. All of the stuff on Reign in Blood is pretty much open E 16th note chugging with some dissonant riff patters thrown in. Usually they have two solos on each song and Kerry's is just doing divebombs, improvised runs, and bends on the little strings of the guitar. Nothing against slayer, I love that shit, but I don't see how they usually get universally praised while newer bands who dance around their song writing formula get bashed for being unoriginal, money hungry bastards. Everyone is entitled to theit opinion but this just kind of...... irks me.

In an attempt to put this thread somewhat back on topic...
Something fun I do to people who ask "D00d what musik do you liek!!!//?/?"...
I always play The Light that Blinds by Shadows Fall. Nice calm classical guitar to relax them then BAM. They fall out of their chair. My friend played it for his grandma and just as she was complimenting him on his taste in 'classical music' she practically got a heart attack and died. People always freak out at it, it's great. And by the time they turn it off they usually dont even hear the "crazee screaming guy zomg" and you still get the awesome stupid comments about it. People just don't see it coming I guess, although it's somewhat obvious...
By the way, if someone can find a more intense, possibly death metal song that does something like this, I want it. |
