My Kvlt Van Halen guitar
FINALLY
It started months and months ago with this guitar, a Peavey Raptor International, which was my first guitar. The paint job was new when I got it, but after having it awhile I knew the paint was shitty; it would get cracks reeally easily, and it scratched really easily too. I wish I took pictures during the whole thing, but I didn't.
SO, first, I took the guitar to wood shop at school the get the routing correct for the Kahler. Easy. I took the base plate of the bridge and made a mark where I needed it cut with a sharpie.
Second, stripping the paint. I used a heat stripper, and after a few hours and a few thousand brain cells, it was down to wood. The guitar was originally PINK, then red, then the shitty black that it was when I bought it.
Next, patching up the hole... I took a piece of oak and cut a slab to fit it into the back of the guitar, which basically had a floyd - type routing. I glued it in place and put in four sheet rock screws to make sure it was very sturdy. To fill the cracks and to smooth out the whole back, I used Bondo (100% redneck style) It came out looking perfectly smooth. I also had to patch up a little of the old bridge routing on the front, as it was to wide in one spot.
Next, I sanded it smooth and primed it, over and over, probably 7 or 8 times (both sanding and priming)
I also needed hardware for the mounting of the Kahler, which I got at Allerdice for 50 - something cents rather than 27 or so dollars from Kahler It worked perfectly.
Next was the paint. I used MASSEY FERGUSON RED (again, 100% redneck) That was like 10 dollars USD for a quart. I used an eighth of a quart, and I sprayed the whole thing three times. Luckily my father has a pretty nice gravity feed gun so I didn't have to worry about that.
After that all, I needed to do was cut the pickguard, paint it black, mount the pickups with longer screws into the body, and do some taping. So I did.
It looks like a redneck did it in his garage, but it doesn't look bad, and it plays pretty well. I think it's more about me doing the whole thing myself, and enjoying that. I could also make the tape job better at any point if I wanted to... but I don't really care that much.

Motherfucking badass. But if I were you, I would've filled the singlecoil cavities before painting to have just one bridge humbucker(a tonezone does nicely for tapping sounds). It came out real nice man.
Aren't you supposed to remove paint by sanding it off?

i've done this before, i even had the same guitar (it was red).i used black and white electrical tape. i just stuck a lic floyd rose in there and some stock humbucker i had laying around. i made a thread on it a long time ago.
its cool you used a kahler but what a waste of a kahler imo. $300 bridge on a $100 guitar made of plywood.

Well routing the guitar for a Floyd Rose would've costed him 200$ or more, installing a Kahler was easier I guess. Maybe someone in school could've gotten it routed for you.

Actually it is a no-name Kahler copy, but the thing is solid, tight, and stays in tune very well. The harmonics are really fucking good now...
Next, I will grind down where the old plastic nut is now, and put on a floyd locking nut I have.
A question: would it be possible to put on a 22 or 24 fret neck on this guitar and have the scale work and everything?

Not unless the neck has a fretboard overhang.

its very easy for a 22 fret neck to be put on there ebcause if you get the right kind, the 22nd fret will just be an overhang.
you could get a 24 fret overhang but you'd have to lose the neck picup andit looks bad. you could modify the neck pocket to make it work too but that usually doesnt turn out too great.

Hah yeah I could imagine making the spot for the neck larger would get messy. I think I'll just leave it as it is, except for a floyd locking nut I'll put on in the next few months. Thank you for the input, though.

I like the guitar except i dont know why you wouldve left that wiring valley between the front and center pickups open like that. Kind of cheapens the look. Other then that, i would definalty get you do soup up mine! Nicely done.
By the way, i always hear this word: My Kvlt Van Halen guitar - what the hell does KVLT mean?
