Gear-acquiring syndrome stories...
Share your GAS stories. What impulse gear/guitar buys have you made recently, how much do you spend on gear generally?
I've been having some GAS lately, it sucks cause you always feel like you need to buy more shit. I sold my DXMG recently for an NJ Ironbird, I bought some passive pickups for it so now I'm selling the EMG's, and I'm swapping the floyd to an OFR soon. A few months ago I bought a multi fx which I sold for a Boss DD-3, EQ pedal, NS2, and a Dunlop Crybaby. And now when my tax return kicks in I think I'm going to get myself a 7 string and sell my combo amp for a tube preamp + poweramp + cab rig(not yet though).
What kind of cash do you spend on gear and guitars and how often? How addicted are you to buying gear?

im trying to sell my random guitar parts and pedals... fix my broken ibanez neck, or sell the thing as parts... get an x2n and a real super2 for my eastwood gp... and eventually sell my line6 spider II stack for a tube stack... either an orange AD or an engl powerball... depending on where my band goes... and with that amp, i'm going to get a booster... probably a maxon (if its the orange), a loop pedal, a delay, and an envelope filter.
other stuff... rack tuner if i cant find a good pedal tuner... and rack EQ... that ART31 seemed nice... 31 band and still 20$ cheaper than the MXR 10-band.
And again... depending on what happens, i might get a fernandez ravelle before or after i get the stack...

I have about $1100 worth of gear and ive been playing for 2 years. $300 for a starter set, $400 for a new guitar,$400 for an amp head,$50 for a pedal. I'm saving for a good cab, hopefully a Randall RS412XLT with V30s, which is about $800 new, an Ibanez RGT42DX,about $700 and a couple of pedals(Whammy Pedal, noise gate) and finally some new pickups for my guitars (X2N and PAF pros). It'll be several years before I actually get any of this though...

My two biggest impulse buys (both off ebay) are my Charvel Model 4, and my Jackson 7 string, the first costing £200, and the 2nd £160. Bought a Sovtek Mig 50w amp head on ebay and had it shipped over from the US, but part exchanged it for my JCM900 a few weeks later. Best GAS for me has to be my ART Tube Preamp that i use for my mics when recording, it sounds really good for £50

Almost every music purchase of mine has been of this "syndrome." Over 9000 dollars in under a year. yeah i'm hooked ha. I bought a used 2004 gibson les paul limited edition at the drop ofa hat on ebay. I went into guitar center.. just to TRY amps... to see what i liked. I left with a new crate blue voodoo 300 watt head cause he took like 200 bucks off the price tag. I went into that guitar center to just mess around with guitars. I ended up putting a used charvel on layaway, because it was a damn good price/sound.
Recently bought an elec drumset on ebay too.

Charvel Mode 4! That's a motherfuckin sick axe! I played one in a local store, it was white with 1 bridge humbucker and one neck singlecoil, but it costed like 500$. Your Jackson 7 string = a DR7? Does Charvel/Jackson make any import 7-strings with Floyds?
Damn AOS, for 3 years that's a lotta cash.
I own my Jackson JS30, bought new: 300$
Tech 21 Trademark 30: 270$.
Boss NS2, DD-3, Dan EQ, Dunlop crybaby: 200$ ish.
BCR Ironbird: 350$
Pickups: 200$
Maybe around 1300-1400$ total including strings, lubricants, other miscellanious shit and parts. Oh yeah, and I ordered an OFR from Guitarpartsdepot today, that was 150$. And I've been playing for 2 years.
My next axe is gonna be a 7 string with a Floyd, maybe a Washburn or an Ibanez RG7260 or 1570(wish it could be a black/green Universe-7! But I'd much rather get a Ran for that much).
I'm gonna wait to buy my tube rig until I actually get a band together and find a place to jam, because having expensive tube gear at home that is never getting fired up cause its too loud would make my balls sag.

haha i hear that. I'm finally constricting my spending. I came close to buying a new cond mic but i'll be finally getting around to doing that soon. I have a pretty big list of items to buy that i still need.
Btw what do you mean by Hp or layby?

Oh fuck yeah, I don't put anything on my credit card, mainly due to the fact I no longer have the 0 interest thing and I've bought most of my shit recently off ebay from other people, so no CC's. Having a large amount of cash leftover from college loans/grants is great.
Speaking of which, I gotta fill out my FAFSA for next year to make sure I get more large sums of extra cash for apparently no reason.

My Charvel apparently has a model 2 neck, because they didn't do the 4 with a maple fretboard and mine has HSS pickups, and a licensed floyd rose, but its never gone out of tune, its a great guitar Im unsure of the model of the jackson, but all i know is that it kicks ass! Its a fixed bridge, which i prefer, and it sounds great even with duncan designed pups in
Soeru: if you want a tube amp, but aren't quite in the 'jam really loud somewhere 3 times a week' category, i'd suggest getting a 50w amp- preferably one with a half power switch. My JCM900 has just that, and i can turn it quite easily upto 4, and get enough tube tone to sound great. Considering my Laney (100W), i couldn't turn even to 1 before it was too loud

my current gear cost roughly $2,500 total, and i've been playing for 11 years. i don't get a lot of gas.. i buy something i really like and then that's that. if i don't want something, i sell it instead of keeping it around. had a gibson les paul for a while.. sold it to get an ibanez rg 570 and some dimarzios (tone zone + air norton). i've always LOVED my yamaha dg80-112 combo amp.. best digital modeller series ever made. an alvarez acoustic i've always been completely happy with.. and a gnx3 for when i need to play/record quietly don't need a whole lot more.

The problem with my case, is i record my own music. Like my own solo project i guess, so i have to have every instrument, recording gear, and some pa/rack gear.

digital drum machine + digital recording software like Adobe Audition + cheap bass (or digital bass samples) + your own record = cheap quality stuff

holy fuck. they really teach ya'll to make "hoo-ah!" into a life philosophy, don't they? i don't think i've spent that much on gear in my entire life, let alone a single year. within the last 6.5 years, however, i have acquired the following:
(all prices approximate and in USD)
Fender American Strat (LH): $650
ESP Eclipse Custom (LH)*: $1850
Zoom 505 multi-effects pedal*: $150
Fender Princeton 112 Combo: $200
Peavey Studio Pro 112 Combo (R.I.P.): $200
DOD Tec-8 effects processor: $50 used
MESA V-Twin Pedal pre-amp*: $230 used
DOD SR231QX graphic equalizer*: $150
QSC USA 400 power amp*: $600
Marshall JCM 900 Lead 1960 4x12 cabinet*: $0 (what you're feeling is envy)
the willpower and sheer brutality to put it all to good use*: priceless
asterisks denote currently-used gear (my Strat sat through a flood and needs major work). GAS has arisen in the form of an 8U or 10U effects rack, an ISP Decimator noise gate, an ESP AX-400 baritone guitar, an additional 4x12 cab (type still to be determined), and an endless supply of various pre-amp tubes. tone = $$$.
by the way, this doesn't seem like the right area for this thread.

why do you have 2 metalzones? If you going to wire them up one after the other, you need a third one for that extra 'oomph'

Nah one was for me, the other for my friend. We were both using 2 different 212 amps at the time. I switched out the speakers in one to match the other, and we both used the metalzones, so we could get.. compatiable sounds.

yeah, too many people forget about that notion of "tone solidarity" between two guitarists. it's good to have slight differences so that you both cover a wider range than either of you would alone, but you also have to make sure that your overlapping frequencies are even and strongly consonant.
example: i'm jamming with a guy right now who's good for the amount of time that he's been playing, but he's young and hasn't really gotten any good gear together. i'm working with the marked items on my list, while he's working with an old Ibanez with passive pickups (and bad wiring ), a Metal Zone, a Crate Powerblock, and a Carvin 4x12. at first, our sounds couldn't have been any further apart -- he was all scream and buzzsaw (w/ no noise gate -- urgh), while i was more balanced but with emphasis on the lows and high-mids. turns out, putting my DOD Tec-8 in-line after his Metal Zone not only allowed us to gate his signal, but we also took the edge off of his tone by running the MZ distortion through the warmest, mildest distortion on the Tec-8. the result is a subtle, balancing boost in his lows, a cut in his higher subharmonics that doesn't infringe upon his "good" high frequencies; and he can go clean by just stomping the MZ. a bit of compression helped, too.
now, the two of us sound brutal as fuck.

I have been developing some serious GAS.
I bought a guitar 3 three weeks ago. I just bought an amp and cab last Friday.
I’ve been playing for about three years now. It all started with me finishing school and getting a job. I had all this free time afterwork so I needed some new hobbies. I bought an xbox and a godin seagull acoustic.
Gear purchased since then.
Guitar:
Seagull $340
Kent acoustic $0
Epiphone LP 2004 $400
US Strat 2002 $800
US Strat 1991 $900
BC Rich Stealth $1500
App $4000
Amps:
Peavey early 90’s 4x12 cab $100
Fender Jam combo $125
Marshall Valvestate 8100 $325
Marshall Valvestate 8100 $400
Marshall JCM 1936 Lead 2x12 $450
Marshall JCM 900 Mark III $500
Marshall JCM 1960A Lead 4x12 $550
App $2500
Ampeg Bass amp and cab $750
Fender P-bass $350
Mic’s, cables, pedals, recorder, tapes, $300
Grand Total = $7800
That’s about $2600 per year!
I’ve actually had to talk to myself yesterday to stop buying gear. This is getting out of hand. But if a good deal comes around, I may not be strong enough to ignore it!

Shit, son!
It's good though you have such a wide... buying range. You've bought guitars, amp's, acoustics, pedals, mic's, tons of stuff. You could get upto some real nasty stuff with such a collection!
I can imagine if you were looking for something to do with it all. It'd be like Malcolm In The Middle when the they discover the diving board in someone's trash.
I have serious GAS, but I can control it down to the merest most subconscious whim FORTUNATELY. I have learned to save so to get bigger GAS buzzes!

Damn, that's a lotta cash! I noticed most of those amp heads are valvestate... why not sell some and get a full tube head? Lol, forget I said that, don't want to convince you to spend more money.

It wouldn't take much to convince me...
The JCM 900 Mark III is a full tube head.
2 power tubes EL34's and three preamp tubes 12AX7's
It's not really the money thing, but it's the problem of seeing a good deal. Some of the stuff I bought was at market value. I'm not too proud of those purchases. The other stuff was bought because they were good deals. It's hard to resist something that you know costs say 500 but the dude is selling it for 350.
Honestly, not having a girlfriend has made this alot easier. When I had one, I couldn't buy anything because I would get shit on and that I would have to spend it on her. Well, this is obviously not the case anymore.
You gotta get your toys before she grabs your boys, you know what I mean?

gettin $1700 for my tax return as soon as the check arrives.. man my first episode of GAS in 2 years is really starting to kick in. i'd love to ditch my gnx3 for a gnx4 and get the mfx supermodels replacement models/patches for it. or a peavey classic 30 combo.. i've always used digital amps, so it'd be nice to get a tube for a while. maybe a fender hot rod deluxe? and it's been too long since i've had just one electric guitar, and it has a floyd on it.. so i'm wanting a string through like a schecter c-1 elite or something along those lines.. mmm. make it stopppp.

My total GAS purchases as of now :
Head/rack setup :
Rack case : 60$
Carvin HD1800 poweramp : 360$
Line 6 POD XT : 200$
Aphex Aural Exciter : 200$
So my 'head' is an 800$ piece. I'm very much so satisfied with it, though if I can find a better solid-state preamp in the future, I'll use it. I've found that I'm definitely a solid-stater.
And if I'm using a bassist, then the way I configure my rig is I have a 200$ Madison Legion ( SOON to be replaced by a Marshall 1960 A ) slant 4x12 on top of a 350$ Genz Benz modded 2x12 ( modded to handle 800 watts ), and the Carvin's two channel feature is used here. The POD has two inputs, one goes into each channel. The Aphex is run through the channel controlling the Genz Benz, and the Madison is dry on its own. So the Genz Benz is extremely bassy, whereas the Madison is kind of thin and dry ( this is because the cab was 200 bucks, go figure ), and I mix the two as a bi-amped system. I need to get a better 4x12 though, the Genz Benz is what's making the tone any good. Once I get a Marshall, then I'll be in business.
So my amp rig is 1350$ total give or take.
For the guitar I've been using a 600$ Schecter C-1 Classic. I've decided that I want to go seven again, so I'm going to get a Jackson Christian Olde Webber's sig guitar. The Schecter is so incredibly thrashed that I'll maybe get 300$ for it, but I'm getting a tax return soon so that'll give me an extra 500$ to work with. In the future after I get the Marshall, I'll try maybe a JMP-1 and as far as a solid-state driven rack rig goes, it won't get much better than that, beyond that point it'll be a matter of taste.

Got any pics of that schecter? I'm getting a nice tax return as well (about $1200 MORE than I thought it would be) and have been thinking about grabbing a schecter c-1 off ebay.. they have some in mint condition for $300, though, so I may have to rip somebody off on ebay and get a mint one for much less than it's worth. The Schecter name doesn't seem to go over too well on there for some reason.. good for me, bad for you heh.
check out this deal.. if i hadn't just started thinking about the c-1 yesterday, i'm sure i would've bought it. i'd prefer black, but it's still quite sexy. Schecter C-1 Elite on ebay for $295 shipped

No question! When I first started playing, I was playing my acoustic at such a low volume because I was embarrassed at how bad I was. I locked myself up for close to 6 months. Anyways, now I’ve got the gear and I have no problems putting the volume up anymore. Rock the joint! I’m sure my parents are dead sick of hearing my boring old riffs from over the years.

I like it quite a bit ... I know I said 'lo-bottom' yesterday because I knew it had some sort of cheesy name for its bass boost system ... Optical Big Bottom. The thing slays. I use both channels at once and each channel covers a different frequency. Harmonics come from your hands, but they seem to have way more 'kick' to them with the Aphex.

Mine is'nt in mint condition whatsoever ... I'm letting it go for 300$ with hardshell case ( the case was given to me so I'm making some money off of it ). Go to the thread I made in classifieds to read about it. Has EMG's though.
