not to sure if they go with this group (i think they refer to themselves as Barbarian Black Metal), but Bal-Sagoth is really good

is Barbarian metal the same as Viking metal?

Hey mick, could you put some of this up on the server??? I love celtic-influenced stuff but you can't get it on the 'net or in the goddamn shops here. I have a ton of Waylander and Cruachan already... it rules.

If your are looking for viking metal or folk influenced metal some real good bands are:

1. Suidakra (awsome folk influenced band)
2. mithotyn (above average viking metal, there album king of the distant forest is the one to look for)
3. ensiferum (not sure but lyrics seem folk or midevil influenced)

ensiferum...and bal-sagoth
not sure if i got exactly what folk/viking metal is, but if those 2 arent viking/folk, they still kick fucking ass

bal-sagoth-> The dreamer in the catacombs of ur, Draconis Albionensis, Tales of the deep woods
Ensiferum-> Intro, Hero in a dream, Token Of Time
(all their album kicks ass =]

Prymordial are a great Viking band, and definitely worth looking for. They sound like a cross between Enslaved and Vintersorg, or a less cheesy Borknagor. Great vocals and guitar work.

I thought Primordial were Irish. Doesn't that make them more a Celtic band than a viking Band? But you're right when you say that they are good. They are very good, especially the album 'Storm Before Calm'.

I think you are right, they are more of a celtic band. But to these unsophisticated Canadian ears, they sound a lot like a Viking band.

Just because a band comes from a certain country doesn't stereotype them to that area of the world. Primordial are Irish but they write viking styled music. Darkthrone comes from norway but that doesn't mean they play viking metal.

Heidevolk

Ainulyndale

Empyrium

Forseti

Tyr

Moonlyght (more progressive black metal with folk influences)

Glittertind

Elvenking

Kampfar

Absu

Lumsk

Falkenbach

Battlelore

Asmegin

Haggard

Otyg

Vintersorg (older shit)

Wintersun

Moonsorrow

Equilibrium

Aes Dana

Satyricon (Dark Medieval Times album)

What characteristic does the pagan metal have? Folk, viking, nordic, etc are pretty straightfoward.

here, from wikipedia:

"Paganism (from Latin paganus) and Heathenry are catch-all terms which have come to connote a broad set of spiritual/religious beliefs and practices of a natural religion, as opposed to the Abrahamic religions. These beliefs, which are not necessarily compatible with each other, are usually characterized by polytheism and animism. Often, the term has pejorative connotations, comparable to infidel and Kafir in Islam."

Im not saying that you dont know what paganism is, but its just part of the point im making. the bands i have that are known as "pagan metal", do sound like viking or folk metal. they only are reffered as "pagan" when their lyrical ideology is of paganism. though some bands who are known better as viking/folk, also can fall into "pagan". usually when a band is pagan black metal, they sound quite folk.

Cool thread. Falkenbach has to be my favorite band of the Viking Metal genre. Lumsk is also a good one to check out.
