Boss Super OVerdrive is sexy
Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer is also sexy tonally
These are my opinions of course, some dont like the sound of those two.
ALSO knowing what amp and cab you use and some band references for the tone you want is also helpful

Even a simple 20$ Boss DS-1 in the effects loop of a tube amp gives you a line boost for leads(or crunchier rythm), that's what I've heard. It wouldn't hurt to try one.

i like the 808 for the good old super tight mid range hump tone. but for the slower tracking gritty tones for like thrash, i think rats are all that.

My guitarists uses a ibanez tube screamer which ads balls, i think Kirk Hammet uses em too.
You can get maxon pedals which are the same as the ibanez ones alot cheaper it just doesn't say ibanez on it.
I've heard of people setting their amp for a lead sound and having a eq pedal with the rhythm setting and clicking their eq pedal off for leads. Never tried it myself though.
