I can admire Mick Thompsons guitar skills when he uses them, and that's about where it ends. I can't stand the terrible vocals and other instruments.. and just their songs in general really.

there are grind bands worse then slipknot, atleast slipknot has a few songs that show decent songwriting riffs. i dont mind slipknot on occasion, they are what got me into more extreme stuff. the biggest thing i dont like about them is the fans and all the hype around them, especially the newest album.

i'm gonna jump on the bandwagon before this thread gets shut down (it is, after all, inevitable). it's always fun to piss some gas on the flames before the fire marshall shows up.

ten years ago, when you told even the most pop-culture motherfucker, "yeah, i like/listen to/try to play death metal, etc.," odds were good they would at least have heard of, say, Cannibal Corpse. now, you say the same thing today, and all you hear is, "oh, you mean like SlipKnot?"

no. not like SlipKnot. i don't know how much the band considers themselves to be death metal because i don't keep up with them, but their fans evidently have the completely wrong idea. the same goes for people who are into bands like Disturbed, System of a Down, KoRn, etc. at their best, they're nu-metal (the prefix is there for a damn good reason); at their worst, they're obscenely bastardized gangsta-rock. groups like Hatebreed also sort of walk the line in those regards. bands like these seem to be lowering the bar of expectation when it comes to heavy music, dumbing down a genre that has taken decades to fully establish itself. the same thing happened with cock rock, and i'm actually sort of starting to see it with black metal as well (Dimmu Borgir, for instance, is very pop-culture here in Hammond). the masses who don't seem to truly understand are always quick to latch on to what little creative sound they can find and mass-produce it to the point of homogeneity.

it's like MTV has to have its own watered-down, assembly-line version of every subculture: whiggers (hip-hop), Mansonites (goths), and now "maggots" (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean ). SlipKnot is like a cause and a symptom of this, all at the same time. and as if that weren't bad enough, their music sucks ass too.

I saw them twice at graspop a metalfestival in belgium and they gave the same damn lame show. I think the singer even gave the same remarks between the songs. I once taped a mtv-concert for a friend whose a slipknot-fan and man it was like the exact copy of the other concerts.
So live they are just a routine-cash in -band, believe me.

I had friends who were slipknot fans and they lend me some cd's. I really, really tried getting into it but man 9 people in one band doesnt work... Everytime something cool happened in a song there was some other shitty drum or sample that ruined it.

I think of all those nu-metalbands slipknot is the least cohesive band too. Those others nu-metalband at least try to make a song. Slipknot is just a bunch of idiots that don't click together, its really crap.

I personally don't listen to Slipknot, but they were one of the first "heavy" bands I got into. Most of us aren't born with Cryptopsy blasting through the speakers by our crib and mobiles of Kerry King spinning above our heads. We all start somewhere and -- though I believe I was about 12 at the time -- I started with Slipknot.

Regardless of any reasons I don't enjoy them, I think the most annoying aspect of it all is the controversy surrounding them. If a so called "real" metalhead doesn't want to listen to them, then don't. But don't bitch at the fans just because they listen to something you personally can't stand. I know, I know. The worst part is that they sometimes label it things like death metal, but in end, who the fuck cares? Just like they're morons for defending this stupid band, I think people who jump on them are morons as well. It's music. And while reasonable arguments about the content of their riffs etc are certainly welcome, I don't see why everyone has to shit their pants over someone with a Maggot t-shirt. People like different styles. And if they happen to call them by the wrong genre name -- misrepresenting the "real" bands -- then that's their problem. Not ours. People know the difference between grindcore and country music when they hear it. It's not fucking rocket science. So why the big fuss? It's the same nonsense that makes punk the overwhelming pile of bullshit that it is. It's all about "poser this" and "poser that". Either you like a band or you don't, but your should never judge music in generalizations and stereotypes. I can say with confidence that I don't like Slipknot, but it's not because I'm "real, yo", it's because I just personally don't like them.

But anyhow, I used to be a lot more closed minded about Slipknot than I am now. All the hype annoys me a little, and the fact they are essentially just a collection of gimmicks, but hey, they are making money playing what they want to play to audiences I'll only ever dream of being in a less mainstream band, so fair, play to them.

I like slipknot, but I hate people who treat them as this godly band or something. There are hundreds of other bands that kick slipknot's ass.

As I said, I like slipknot, but I never like a band without seeing the flaws in it;

1. The guitarists practically plays in binary code half the time (if you were looking at a tab, you'd see something like "E|100011-101001000111100101--|
2. They have 9 members. It's a band, not a fucking hockey team!
3. They don't use all their members to their full potential. They have a synthesizing dude (TWO if you count the DJ who should quit fucking around on stage). He has the power to create a symphony behind the music! And he wastes his time humping his shit on stage.

There's a couple more flaws I see in them. Despite all that, I like them because of what they have done. They have inspired alot of youth these days to get into metal and to chase your dreams. I never would have gotten into music if it weren't for Slipknot. Seeing them on stage, that energy, that fire (and I don't mean the pyro). That's what I like about them.

And as I said, I hate these extreme fans of slipknot, these "maggots." You're not proving your "alliegance" or "loyalty" to slipknot by whining eveytime someone has something bad to say about it. People have these things called "opinions," and some of them may be bad or good. It's up to you to grow up and accept them instead of bitching when you don't agree with someone. Agree to disagree. Or, if you can't do that, shut the fuck up and let everyone live in peace.

The fans. Then again there are like 198948985 other bands with asshole fans (ICP, Tool, Dream Theater....well every band has asshole fans but those more than anything).
