One example of overkill on distortion is Will Rahmer of Mortician. I'm sure his extra low tuning has something to do with it as well, but if you listen to his bass from one of their live shows, you can definitely tell that the distortion is WAY too high. It sounds like he's just farting into a microphone or something. Too much distortion will blurr everything together and you won't be able to hear the notes. Overdrive, on the other hand, can give a nice fuzzy or buzzy sound to your bass, keep it heavy, but not overstep the boundaries. So that's, in my opinion, why you might want to choose overdrive instead of distortion. Of course, if the dist is low enough, it should be fine. The only thing I don't like about overdrive is that it sometimes makes the tone a bit too muddy and not rich enough, but I'm sure fucking with the EQ could fix that, if it's even a problem.
