I've got a problem. I'm planning to buy a bass effect (distortion or overdrive) but i'm not sure about each one, cause i don't know what are the differences of sounds beetwen them. Can anybody help ?

In my preference, get the overdrive. I hate distorted bass. Too much gain and there is no use in playing in a band.

got any examples? i mean can you gimme examples of bands which uses distortion and overdrive, coz im not very in topic of bass effects...

One example of overkill on distortion is Will Rahmer of Mortician. I'm sure his extra low tuning has something to do with it as well, but if you listen to his bass from one of their live shows, you can definitely tell that the distortion is WAY too high. It sounds like he's just farting into a microphone or something. Too much distortion will blurr everything together and you won't be able to hear the notes. Overdrive, on the other hand, can give a nice fuzzy or buzzy sound to your bass, keep it heavy, but not overstep the boundaries. So that's, in my opinion, why you might want to choose overdrive instead of distortion. Of course, if the dist is low enough, it should be fine. The only thing I don't like about overdrive is that it sometimes makes the tone a bit too muddy and not rich enough, but I'm sure fucking with the EQ could fix that, if it's even a problem.

so example distortion can be found in Sodom songs too? and the overdrive makes the bass sound like overdriven guitar? or i fucked everything up?

I personally haven't listened to Sodom, so I can't really say anything about their sound. More simply put, the main difference is that distortion has more gain than overdrive does. So if you use distortion on your bass, it will have more of that fuzzy effect and possibly a brighter sound. But overdrive tends to be more like a crunchy effect and not as strong. You won't make your bass sound like a guitar either way, so it just depends on which sound you like better.
