Equalizer - What i need?
hi! first of all english is not my language so hope i will explain everything clearly I was looking around for an equalizer,i've got a 5150II head with a 1960a cab..think it's in a classic by now...however...I'm wondering what could i get...
I know there will be millions of thread about equalizer i just wanted to make a new one eheh no i have some question...now my choises are:
- MXR 10band equalizer
- Some rack 31 band...maybe too much but i'm greedy
What do you think about this?
http://www.behringer.com/DEQ2496/index.cfm?lang=ENG
It could be used in live sessions too..right? otherwise i see i could find analogic 31band equalizer at the same price of a mxr10band..second hand things obviously....it's just a size matter or i have to prefer something? please help meeee

Get an ART 31 band EQ --- it'll cost you actually a bit less than an MXR 10-band, and you have WAY more control with it. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Don't get a Behringer EQ --- they don't seem to have a decent track record with much of anything that they make.
EDIT : I guess they changed the design a bit since I ordered mine ... but here's a link : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...sors?sku=180645

I've got a behringer dual 16 band EQ, and i think its fine, have no issues with it. It sits in my rack and does its job EQing my Laney.
ART gear seems to be very good in my experience, so i'd suggest that along with John.

I have a MXR KFK 10 Band EQ (kerry king sig.) yah yah...I know.
It is cool though, because it has two amp outputs...so if you have two amps (like I do) I can use it in conjunction with my pod-marshall-mesa....all sorts of options there.
Personally though, I would rather have a 31 band too....just because it gives you more customizing options.

Thanks for the answers I definitely decided for a 31 band equalizer but for now i didnt find anyone selling this ART HD131 in italy (i live here) shops included....and shipping from there could be expensive because of taxes too..aaaaaa it looks a good equalizer however...i will see, there is maybe a good on-line shop where i could buy it and make it arrive in italy? I saw musiciansfriend.com ships only some brands internationally and not this one
Or maybe there is some other good equalizer i could look for?

I bought a DOD SR231QXLR about 4 or 5 years back (although then it was called a SR231QX, but whatever), from Guitar Center. dual-channel, 31-band graphic, In/Out and Low Cut buttons, and -12 to +12 input gain control on each channel. only 2 rack spaces. it's been my holy grail of tone despite the fact that it's only just now having problems (channel 1 is acting weird and needs some attention from a tech, but I only run through channel 2 anyway), but it's definitely road- and show-worthy. very no-frills, totally analog, simple, and reliable. i even remember seeing places online selling them for about $150 USD.
can't beat that with a 20-pound sledge, in my honest opinion.

go to a store and ask if they will order one in for you... i'm sure they can... but it might add a bit to the price.
oh and a question, would i be able to run an equalizer inbetween my amp and cab? Its just that if i add modelling before my spider II... it cuts it out and just plays the same sterile spider tone... so i was thinking get the EQ after it so it doesnt sound like shit anymore heh.
ps. i just got back from italy on thursday, it was awesome.

yeah i will try to check in some big store here,i just have to decide for which equalizer..the_bleeding I'm glad you found yourself well here in italy I'm near Parma maybe you know the place..I think a rack equalizer could works fine in the FX loop of the amp..but i'm not a guru i'm looking for one only now...however guys it seems to me that an analogic equalizer is always preferred to some digital one
I saw this DOD have Frequency Center Tolerance 5% instead ART is around 1%..or 3% it depends on the model...but I really dont know how much it is important...mh..a dual channel could be nice but one could be enough for now...I'm confused like a rabbit in a vegetables shop everything could be good eheh

i have no clue about specs like that. aside from piquing my curiosity, Frequency Center Tolerance sounds like something that would be better in the lower ranges as opposed to the higher ranges; but that's just a completely uneducated guess on my part.
and a dual-channel is good because even if you don't need the second channel, a bandmate might still be able to put it to good use.

Hey i looked around and i found these two equalizers for now..i could get them almost for the same price i think, one is still on eBay..
- ALTO EQU231 - it's new and here i can have it for 135€ + shipping cost
http://www.bluearan.co.uk/menu/index.php?id=ALTEQU231
- RANE MOJO MQ302 - It's still on eBay but i i could get it for the same price, second hand.
http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ADME:L:RTQ:IT:1
I think the second one could be ok, but I just want a final help from someone who knows these things better than me and then i will shut up eheh..what do you think about them?

No, you can not run an amplified signal into a line level input like the one in almost every EQ unit I've seen

Yes it makes a HUGE difference, an eq alters the wished frequencies, making them higher or lower depending on how you want it..

Yeah, definately an eq w/ a 5150, I've found that that's the perfect combination. My 5150 sounds much better w/ it in the loop.

just like Timur said. and with that in mind, an EQ can be used to eliminate feedback, tone down harmful subharmonics, and basically give you a very fine control over your sound that isn't otherwise possible. there's a lot of trial-and-error involved whenever you first learn how to use one, but sitting down and being patient with a quality 31-band can yield very rewarding results.
one thing i've noticed, though, is that they're best used in a subtractive manner (at least when high-gain and distorted signals are involved), i.e. turning down the frequencies that you don't want as opposed to turning up the frequencies that you do. just a random tip, i guess.
