Just played in Germany with Aosoth and the beer there was kinda awful. Even for slamming down, the taste was really quite unpleasant. It was Becker's or Decker's.

My dad says he turned out OK, and I know that his dad and his teachers (and the security forces) gave him some pretty severe "disciplinary" beatings throughout his childhood. My dad's probably the most fucked up person I know, no joke. I got a few clouts when I was a kid too, and...well...I TURNED OUT ALRIGHT!

I wasn't implying that beaten kids grow up to be psychos or the like, but pretty much everyone from this and the previous generation is on meds or has some sort of mental issue, and while I'm not suggesting that they're all caused by receiving slaps from their folks or their teachers, it's gotta factor into it on some level. Mental illness is a culmination of things, violence from authority figures being a part of it.

I'm not sure how effective physical punishments are, to be honest. Sure, if you clobber a kid enough times he'll become pretty fucking quiet/obedient, but is that the kind of obedience you want from a kid? Besides it being a sort of cold, brutal Pavlovian conditioning I can't imagine that it's setting them much of an example. It's sending the message out that if you fuck up, you get fucked up. Nothing is learnt from the experience, you just learn which behaviours will provoke a sore arse. I steal candy, I get slapped, I learn nothing about why stealing isn't a good idea or how it affects other people. Kids need an incentive to be "good" not a fear of what will happen if they aren't. And lets face it, if your parents are the sort of people who would explain all of that to you then chances are they wouldn't resort of violence to begin with.

That said, the urge to slap screaming kids is pretty overwhelming sometimes. And I think that's probably a good indicator of why people do it - satisfying a personal urge rather than disciplining the child.

People always believe that the latest generation is worse than the one which preceded it. That means that when your parents were kids your grandparents thought they were a shower of cunts haha. The truth is, most of these asshole kids shed their assholiness when they hit a certain age. The ones who don't end up on Celebrity love Island.
