7string passive pickups
Anyone try out some of the different 7string passive pickups (duncan dist7,JB7, invader7, tonezone7,evolution7, ect...) what's your judgement on them. I just bought my first 7string, a cheap Ibanez RG7321, im looking for a clear death metal tone through its basswood body.

I just checked EMG's site, it seems they only make the 707. See ill probably buy a much nicer 7string afterwards which will probably have 707's and a mohagany body. So id like to keep this one with passives so I can try out the different PU's they have now, its just where to start.

Depends on what type of music you are going to use the guitar for. Ex for rythem id say the Invader or X2n but for solos/shred i might say the evolution.

Thanks for the info Unanything, its actually useful, I never heard of lundgren before. And by the way for everyone else the emg 81-7 is actually called the 707 and no its not what I want.

I know dimarzio is going to put out a x2n for a 7 string, but i didn't think it was out yet or are you just unclear that the guy wants a 7 string PU and not a 6 string...

There is such thing as an 81-7 as well as a 707. They stopped producing the 81-7 as far as i know though. Which is probably why its not on their site which caused some confusion. If you look at the Stephen Carpenter 7 strings they have 81-7s in them.

A seven string X2N? Wow....
I can imagine it now. Putting it in a Jackson Stop-tail Dinky. Turning your amp up to eleven. Tuning to B. Hitting a big meaty chord. And Blowing out the wall in your fucking band room.

The lungdren is a good pickup...at least according to Meshuggah...since it is what they use....bit hefty price tag though.
The passive EMG's for a 7 string would be fucking retarded because A: You would still have to route the body; B: The tone would still suck. IF you were willing to get EMG's, the best bet would be to get a 81-7 of course.
Otherwise, the Dimarzio Evolution is a good bet on great tone....stay away from the blaze. Also a Seymour Duncan JB always sounds great too. Just depends what tone you are really after.

Yeah, im buying 7s pickups to, im going with an x2n-7 and a SDJazz for great versatility in my guitar, which will be a higher end Ibanez. I think there's only like 1 shop on the net that sells x2n-7's, it's music123, the link being here to the pup http://www.music123.com/DiMarzio-X2N-7-i420108.music

I will agree with phil on that...
A tone zone would be a nice option too, those fuckers are clear but can rip your face off.

.
I'm considering it for my 7-strings.
The M6 and M8 were only recently developed because Ibanez nicked Nevborn's Sleipner 8-string design and 6-string players wanted one for themselves.
Is the 81-7 really just another name for the 707?!

no, the 81-7 is a 7 string version of the 81... the 707 is a 7 string pickup cased off of the 85... which would explain why everyone complains about muddyness in 707's as bridge pickups.

I assumed I'd have to replace the stock pickups in my Ibanez RG 1527, but I was wrong. They rock.
I was going to go for a Dimarzio Evolution if that helps.
I always thought the X2N was kinda harsh and cutting, but maybe it would sound far more balanced on a 7 string model.

You are right on man, the evo is where its at, i have it in my 7's bridge pos. and it is tight as fuck, i play tech death, similar to spawn of possession mixed with a bit of trey azagoth style guitar work, and i have a very clear sound, the notes are really defined and whatnot, if your going for clarity, and atmosphere, go for the evo, works great for the technical-brutal shit btw

Thats what im afraid of, I had evo's in a Ibanez Jem 555 before, i didnt like them, I dont know if it be that much different for the 7string, I know the pickup has some differences. I gotta find a pickup id like in basswood, i think ill try the Duncan Distortion7, its what i had originally planned and you never hear anything about it, ill review back here after I swap them, should be this weekend.

Really, you didnt like evo's in a Jem?Then I would say dont get them for your 7.I thought evo's sounded as good as they got in Jems.Thats personal preference for you.
