Most Representative Band from Each Country
Metal it's listened in all over the world it has different styles, lyrics, themes, languages that make it's sound to be different and original.
So every country has it's most representative band, from mine i go for
Cenotaph

Ac/Dc > Alll
On a more interesting note, it is a difficult question. Take a country like Germany - do you want representative bands like Rammstein wich everyone recognises as german, and represent the german music scene as a whole, or a band like Gut, which is porngrind and generally nobody knows about.

My country has a metal movement, most of it is bullshit, our culture
is so twisted, most Aus metal bands end up elsewhere
This country is lacking.
one would be SEGRESSION

hah, i own Vempire, Dusk and her embrace, Cruelty and the beast, From the cradle to enslave, Midian, Bitter suites to succubi, Damnation and a day, and Nymphetamine. and i love a couple, or more, songs of every one of them (and there is sentimental value included for many). so yeah, its either Cradle of filth, or Hecate enthroned

I could be wrong, but i don't think he wanted your favorite bands from each country. I THINK he was asking for the band who's sound most....i can't think of the right word. like if someone were to ask you what american death metal sounds like, you could have them listen to suffocation to get a good idea of american death metal. I dunno, maybe not. fuck it

Maybe Meshuggah for Sweden? That's what came to my mind at least. And hopefully Slayer pops into peoples' heads when they think of American metal.

FearFrost and Beast of Carrion are right. So far, everybody else doesn't show any understanding of the word 'representative;' I see a bunch of lists made up of somebody's favorite band from a given country. That said, it's not really that good of a question.

Most representative bands from each country.
US- I'd say Suffocation
Sweden- In Flames and At The Gates are definitly main influences on most of the bands from there.
Poland- Vader
Finland- Don't know, lots of Folk Metal stuff. Finntroll maybe.
Norway- Emperor

This is about metal. I don't see how Beethoven reprents all the metal bands from Germany.

LOL
nice wording..
I figured Cryptopsy is definitely representative of Canadian Extreme metal. Its an exageration of all the other key elements from extreme bands I can think of from Canada.
Shame I dont live there. The UK? From the area Im from, Carcass. (Thanks tim)
All the extreme bands here have an element of old school writing but also a willingness to branch out, but theres always an element of grind ness.
Thats my reckoning anyways. I dont know about the WHOLE of England, but certainly the bands I listen to, yea

No, Tranny, it wasn't. It was somewhere in between, which is better, but not the same thing. If it had been the same thing I'd have singled you out when I singled the others. You may understand what representative means but your list doesn't evince that. I'll get into specifics if you really want so much attention paid to your list, but I don't see the point of it.
Wagner is probably more representative of Germany than Beethoven. Jingoistic, overreaching, hateful, throwing everything in ad hoc, and the result occasionally so sublime we can forgive the rest. Then again, this all doesn't have much to do with the music Germany has produced recently. The band for that job would probably be Kraftwerk. In the realm of metal, probably Rammstein. And now I hope everybody sees how silly this question is.

PST how is that different from what the OP wanted? those are bands that are forerunners and good representations of metal from their country. sodom (kreator also) are pure german thrash, norways black metal scene is well represented by darkthrone, etc

I can see that you tried - if I couldn't tell that by your original post the fact that you've tirelessly, obnoxiously defended it would tell me that. And in the case of Norway you've probably chosen as well as you could, though why Darkthrone is any more representative than, say, Mayhem is lost on me.
But Bodom? Most Finnish bands aren't really in that direction. TOOH? Your favorite of the three Czech bands you know. Too small a sample to know which one, if any, is the most representative. Germany's biggest scene in the 80s was power metal, not thrash; Helloween, not Sodom. I guess it's better than choosing Necrophagist. I know a few Dutch metal bands, but none that sound like Pestilence. etc etc.
Dealing with extreme personal preferences and certain information gaps is just one of the reasons why I think this is a silly question. In the end it's not practicable, and, unless you're dealing with a case like AC/DC in Australia or Rush in Canada, it won't have an answer.

For the metal scene i would probably say (unfortunately) 8 foot Sativa, they would be the most well known.

These aren't always my favourite bands but band I think best represents the spirit of the country.
Australia - Sadistik Exekution, encasing the spirit of Australia, Hail Patriots!
America - Morbid Angel
Mexico - Brujeria
UK - Boltthrower
Denmark - Illdisposed
New Zealand - 8 Foot Sativa
Canada - Cryptopsy
Sweden - Arch Enemy
Finland - Annihilatus
Norway - Darkthrone
France - Gronibard
Greece - Rotting Christ
"PROBLEMATIC SAID THIS"
Australia - Psycroptic (well, theyre from Tas, so it half counts)
"END"
Well of course it does Tasmania is a part of Australia what are you thinking.

In the end it's not practicable, and, unless you're dealing with a case like AC/DC in Australia or Rush in Canada, it won't have an answer.
|
there are definitely arguable points, but really how different are darkthrone and mayhem anyways? both are the same principle in both music and subject
about bodom- yeah there are tons of bands! i would consider what bodom sound like to be a very "finnish" sound. kalmah, skyfire, insomnium, mors principium est
dutch-ive heard a few dutch bands that sound like pestilence, but the fact is that there arent a hell of a lot of dutch dm bands anyways but pestilence are a good representative anyways. Creepmime, pyspheria...
about czech-yeah but once again not a hell of a lot of bands from their. i also wanted to just give TOOH a shoutout
this topic would have been better if there was more room, that is to say "representative band from their scene". then there wouldnt be any conflict over sodom and helloween....and german powermetal didnt even occur to me anyways

There shouldn't be any conflict anyway cos who really cares in the first fucking place who is right and who is wrong PST shouldn't have picked on you for it because noone cares if he wins a pointless argument about which band represents what and you shouldn't have taken his bait.
I mean what big deal is it if anyone in this thread is right or wrong. Who cares.

ummm just to be a little more distant, for jerusalem (or that general area) I'd say melechesh (all the original band members were from jerusalem)
another canadian dm band that isnt in the extreme/grindcore would be quo vadis, also from montreal, but cryptopsy and gorguts are probably much more well known
even though they arent directly from ireland/ scottland absu's members are of irish/scottish descent and thats a large part of the lyrical bases, so id say that absu reperesents that area best..
oh and for the netherlands i wanna say iniquity..

UK:
Maiden

Saxon
Bolt Thrower
Carcass
Napalm Death
My Dying Bride
I think those bands are most representative of the British sound, in their respective sub-genres. Not hard when most of those bands started their sub-genres anyway!

I don't give a damn about winning an argument, here or anywhere. I don't hold it against Tranny for any of his choices and I didn't 'bait' him or anybody; he elected, twice, to be scrutinized while I tried to avoid saying anything specific about him or anybody else. I think this is a ridiculous and pointless topic that would be better off ignored, since nobody's going to put in the thinking it takes to choose actually representative bands but just list who they like anyway. Which would be a better topic, if still pointless as hell. I know everybody loves making these kinds of lists, though, so I'll leave you to it.

they are 100% power metal but without the weird power metal vocals. the vocals are high rhaspy screams, like in black metal. its pretty much the perfect combination for me, insane melody and high vocals... as Mithotyn

in this whole paragraph all you say is "ok so nevermind tranny WAS correct" and MAYBE "i dont like this thread anyways" as a smoke screen
please do "leave it to us"
iniquity are not from the netherlands, they are from denmark. huge difference.
quo vadis ARE very well known and a great example of the uniqueness of some canadian metal bands.
rush rule but get old fast. im partial to yes' "starship trooper"
more blunts apparently needs less blunts because he has no idea what the fuck we're taking about

They rip off Camel a ton on Still Life. Mikael didn't even write the main riff in Benighted. And Damnation???
