Decent 2x12 Cabinets?
OK, I have a 4x10 cabinet in my basement, but it is too large to fit into my car for transportation. I am wondering, what are some good 2x12 cabinets that I could swing for around $200-$350? I know thats cheap but I don't have a hell of a lot to work with,
I am basically looking for something that is going to have good headroom, portability, and preferably something that will compliment my PeaveyTriple XXX Head.
Thanks

As much as the Genz-benz entices me, I am afraid I have about $250 to work with. Any other suggestions? I mean, I really just need this for practicing with my band(s) and a 4x10 isn't easy to lug around.
Cheers

I second the Avatar suggestion, cheap, nicely made, and you can choose your speakers.

Speakers are voiced differently, you need to elaborate on what tone you want.If your not too sure,go v30s or G12T-75's.

Well, I guess I want a very clear, tight sound from my speakers. I don't want one of those vintage sounding speakers that have too much low end and no treble, like old Fender amps, for example. I hope that helps. Could someone explain the differences between the basic makes of speakers there are?
Cheers

Errrm, I might be wrong, but I feel pretty confident saying that old fender amp has got damn bright speakers
Maybe you are asking for eminence legend speakers, I heard they have lots of low end and lack treble
edit: or maybe their name was V12's .. I dont remember, check out eminence website

Surely Avatar would be more expensive than a used Marshall 1936 2x12?

Genz Benz G-flex, if it hasnt been said.
Bogner and Soldano make some of the neatest smaller cabs IMO.

Not brand new actually, the Avatars are still probably much better though. They sell for wicked cheap on ebay.
Randall and Ampeg 2x12's or any other brand cab with decent speakers are a decent buy, they show up on ebay often for cheap.
Genz Benz G-Flex is a kickass choice, because its a ported cabinet, and handles insane bass frequencies that will make it sound like a full 4x12. You can pick one up for 350-450$.
And if you live in the EU, Framus 2x12's with V30's are the absolute best bang for the buck cabinet you can possibly buy new. 300 euros is one hell of a deal for em. If I don't end up trading my Engl Fireball for an Engl Pre I'm getting the framus 2x12 myself, I've heard some Laney clips with it and it sounded fuckin amazing.

Yeah and thinking about it the 1936 is pretty huge for a 2x12, so not very portable. Which Framus was it, the FR212 CB? I might consider that to pair with an Ampeg VH140C whenever I manage to find one.

Yeah framus only make 2 different 2x12's the FR212CB and one that's made out of solid bubinga, but is expensive as fuck. It handles 140W as the V30's are 70 watts each(some people say 60, others 70, and some 4x12 v30 cabs are rated at 300W so they must be 75W, wtf).
Just don't go diming the master volume on your Ampeg and you'll be safe.

My choices would be :
Avatar 2x12 with speakers of choice
Genz Benz G-Flex 2x12
Mesa 2x12
Out of most that I've seen in this thread. I personally would go with the Genz Benz, because everything I've ever heard through a Genz Benz G-Flex sounds awesome.

V30's ARE 60W not 70w or 75w.
60W, 60W, 60W, 60W....
All cab manufacturers will tell you 70W or something buf if you ASK CELESTION they say 60W.

Then why the hell are so many v30 4x12 cabs rated at 280W instead of 240? Framus rate their 2x12's and 4x12's 100W and 200W respectively, but they're V30's so they're understating it, wonder why?

Thats pretty bad that companies are misrepresenting the power handling of cabs, could end up fucking up someones rig. Unless Celestion actually understate the V30 themselves WTF?? On the website it definitely says its 60w though.

You might want a higher wattage cab than that if you're gonna get that Ampeg SS/VH just to be safe.

do SS amps get those high wattage spikes that tubes do? I thought it had to do something with adding current in the preamp (for disto), which would in turn dump more current into the poweramp, giving it current spikes when you pick harder...
But anyways, for an amp to spike above its RMS, you have to have it cranked... and doing that to SS typically makes it sound like poo... so should he really worry?

The Ampeg VH140C is a 140W RMS stereo amphead. Seems a little too close for comfort in a 120-140W 2x12 cab. So long as you don't dime it past 2 o' clock you'll be safe, but even that'll be fuckin loud! The VH140C despite being SS is a ridiculously loud amp and kicks ass at high volumes apparently.
I would just suggest some speakers that can handle a few more watts to be safe unless you're not gonna be playing the amp at retardedly high volumes.

get a 2x12 with eminence Manowars. Theyre 120 watts RMS, 240 peak each, built for power metal, and way cheaper than celestions. I've only ever heard good things about them.

120W RMS each speaker and cheaper than V30's? Damn. Other Eminences should be taken into consideration.
Another suitable alternative = Celestion G12K-100's. The same ones in my Mode 4 4x12 cab that I sold. MASSIVE lowend and not so much mids, kinda scooped, you may or may not like this. But for a VH140C I would suggest something with more mids.

Every once in a while the matching Ampeg SS-212 cabs pop up on ebay. I have the SS-412 and if its anything like the 4x12 cabinet it will have whatever Celestion they came with and compliment the amp well. Plus it will be stereo....which is what you want, because will sound a lot clearer and keep the chorus from sounding like shit because they do have a true stereo chorus. It just isnt the same with a mono cab.

um.. not really into power metal, and the GK's would handle DM but you don't suggest them?
oh and totally irrelevant to the thread but the other one that i made is linked to this one so here goes. I found the SS head yes, and have bidded on it, and I just recently found a VH head, said to be mint condition, which is... 400$, that is a lot for me. If i don't get the SS, i will try to bid for VH, sound good?
also if i did buy a 4x12, there would be no problem right?

whatever rubs your buddha.
Dude, powermetal is so generic... these speakers are pretty much designed for everything metal. Trust the Manowars, they will blow your head off. The best part is that the huge wattage means that the only thing you'll hear distorting is the amp, and not the speakers, because once the speakers start clipping it stresses the fuck out of them, and if they blow when you have a tube head attached, you'll fry your transformer.

The Manowars don't have anything to do with power metal LOL. I'm not suggesting scooped mid speakers because they sound harsh to me and don't seem to cut through due to lack of mid response...
If you buy a 4x12 of course there's no problem, just hope your neighbors have earplugs!

what cabs have manowars in them? and i hope they don't have as much mids as say eric rutan has in this band. I pretty much want the typical low-end tone. (as you pretty much know)
and thank you two both very much for all the help
edit: how would G12T 100's sound in a 212? good for metal? or again is there too much scoop in the mid?

splawn, electric amps, matamp... basically boutique companies.
Email Scott Splawn, he knows his shit and will help anybody when it comes to anything, and recommends using eminences.
Electricamp/matamp are basically the same company in different locations, and are known for their wicked low end, and they use manowars to accentuate it. An amp that thunders is only as good as the speakers you hear it through.

The last VH140C combo that went by on ebay had G12K-85's essentially the same just lower wattage. Those are scooped mids too.
I personally like Rutan's mid-fat sound, but it's not a matter of tonal preference here, you really need some decent mid response for the amp to cut through and be heard in a band situation. The VH140 is retardedly loud so cutting through will be solved by cranking the volume more, but the excess treble and bass will drown out the bassist and cymbals if you play in a loud band.
G12-75s, G12K's, or most other scooped mid speakers will simply not compensate the VH140 too much because it already has handful of boosted treble and bass frequencies, it's a naturally slightly scooped sounding amp, so you should really use something with more mids to complement it.
Mids are your friend!! Keep them in your tone.
Again don't get turned off by getting a V30 cab, if you get one you will be happy, just don't crank it too much(shouldn't need to)! Or run it in a lower ohmage(ie: 16 instead of 4 or 8).

Yeah but I was exaggerating, just don't crank it too much to be safe. Like never beyond 2-3 o clock or something. If you EVER hear any sort of speaker fizz when playing stuff at high volumes then you're playing it too loud.

Yeah keep in mind it's 140W RMS at 8 ohms. It can probably get much much louder than your little average 15W combo amp only on 2-3, whilst to get that volume on a 15W SS amp you'd probably have to dime the volume.

no idea about vaders... supposedly theyre dark.
Randalls use g12t-75's and celestion v30's, so basically, they sound like marshall cabs. They are however a bit larger so they have more bass definition. The cheaper ones (the ones that arent hand built) arent sealed properly though... so sealing them and adding foam to the insides would be recommended.

Vaders are sterile and transparent, they don't color the tone much, they use eminence speakers, they're very well built too I hear, very thick plywood enclosure for a massive lowend.
Randall cabs are awesome depending on which one, not all have the V30 G12-75 combo. I wouldn't say they sound anything like marshall cabs, even cabs with the same speakers will sound different, in any case I don't know any marshall cab that mixes those 2 speakers. The Randall cabs for the Warhead or Cyclone or similar are probably kick ass.
There's one Randall that has a huge 15" speaker and 2 12" speakers and it's ported like those GB G-flexes, as weird as it sounds I hear it sounds goddamn amazing and unique.

I made myself an open backed 2x12 cab, and although not perfect by any means, it sounds great- my next project will be a 4x12 or a sealed-but-ported 2x12, but the open backed sounds so big, especially for nice loud clean chorus-y sounds

If you have the right tools and directions you can make your own. You'd be better off buying a used one or an Avatar or something. Save your time.

I couldn't agree more, it isn't really cheaper to build your own (the $100 quoted on that duncanamps site is rubbish), it cost me about £200 to do mine, thats with the speakers and all hardware included... although i do have enough wood left (excluding the baffle) to make another cab. Still pretty fun and rewarding though

Yah it's great when you can make your own and it turns out really well. I made my own stand for my fish tank but it wasn't any cheaper than buying an already made one. DIY doesn't always mean cheaper.

Shit man no clue, never heard of the brand, it's probably crap(that's what I was trying to point fun at ) if he's selling it for that little, but that's still a good deal for just the head. Just keep the cab at home as your "knockaround" cab and buy another in the future when you have the money.
By the way, after some research, I found out that the SS does NOT sound exactly the same as the VH. It's similar, but the VH is more refined sounding, a little better than the SS as it's a more modern version. It sounds more saggy and tubelike than the SS, and is probably more reliable too. But the SS's are a good buy because they're much cheaper than the VH's, a mint condition VH140C head can cost as much as 500 bucks.
But still no need to worry, plenty of death metal, grind and hardcore bands used the SS140C, SS150, and the C, CH and CA models back then, so their tone will be great. Just buy one that's in really good working condition because they are very old amps after all. The VH/SS was kinda like what 5150's and blue voodoos are these days... best bang for the buck hi gain heads around.
