I've had two neck thru's break my heart and they were basses - neckthrus suck! The main killer I've heard is temperature fluctuations and humidity. I killed my really nice Hamer and my old Guild/Burnside with too much time in the trunks of cars and being left in rehersal spaces and basements.

My current neckthru is an "83 mockingbird bass I keep it in the same AC'd room all the time and have it on a hanger. So far so good but it does change some with the seasons. It still sucks knowing it's going to die some day - Neckthrus suck!

But my point is to have it serviced by a tech twice a year. As long as you stay on top of it you can compensate for any changes the wood makes. i wish I had...

wow...terrible advice. First of all, your guitars should be in a case whenever you aren't playing it....obviously because it helps shield it from the environment.

Second off...why the fuck would you leave your guitar in your trunk and than say it sucks because its a neck-through....

What the fuck do you think is gonna happen retard?

Basically do the exact opposite of what matterthief has done with his poorly maintained guitars. When not playing, leave it in a case...not on a hanger, or some hot dry dingey basement. Bottom line, your guitar needs to be acclamated to a set environment and that is consistent so the guitars performance will be consistent. It is made of wood...wood swells and cracks.

OH and matterthief....I just noticed you are from Arizona....NO SHIT IT GOT FUCKED UP. YOU LIVE IN ARIZONA....ONE OF THE DRYEST PLACES IN AMERICA!!! HELLO!!!!

How does a case shield a guitar from the environment? Wouldn't you say it is much easier to control the environment of a room than the inside of a guitar case?

I never left a guitar in the trunk of a car but that was how I transported it to band practice. I say neckthrus suck because they are more vulnerable - once they warp - thats it.

Ignoring your sophmoric attempts at humor, is there any reason for not storing guitars on a hanger? I've had my guitars hung for the last ten years and haven't had any problems but if there is something you would like to share I'm all ears.

PS - I lived in NJ when said guitars warped

sophmoric? you can do better than that....I'm not gonna let this turn into a pissing battle...

you said in your post your guitar got damaged from to much time in a trunk....and from being in basements. In Arizona its fucking hot and dry. How do I know? In El Paso its hot and dry...
and neck-thru guitars aren't done if the neck gets warped either. There are these special people in the world...called luthiers. Maybe you should look one up before imparting bad advice....good bye.

I don't want a pissing battle either but my advice WAS to take his guitar to a luthier.

Now now, lets not ruin NorthernDragons' thread.

I think Philkilla answered your question. Keep it in a nice insulated hard case.

I would love to get a neck-thru some day aswell

Agreed, it's nice to know I can just make a phone call and have a new replacement neck sent to me.

My advice:

Don't break the neck. You can't replace it with another one.

i haven't had any trouble with the bridge, it's a licensed fr similar to the one on my dxmg so i'm used to this kind of bridges. yea the pickups could be better but they're alright for now i guess

You care for a neck-thru like you do any other guitar you value.

1) Keep it in it's case when you're not playin it.
2) Keep the case away from places that have highly fluctuating/extreme temps (near AC/heating vents, windows, doors, TRUNKS!!)
3) STRAP LOCKS (can't stress this one enough)
4) If you live in a dry place or a place with snow in the winter, get a guitar case humidifier.

what do you mean by strap locks?
do you mean that you should use them or you shouldnt use them? or do you mean that you should take them off when theyre in the case or you should keep them on when theyre in the case?

I had no problems whatever with my Neckthru Ibanez. I did just have to sell it to afford a new 7 string, but I took care of it and it was perfect when I sold it.

What I advise has pretty much already been said:

Don't let it dry out, and keep tempurature changes as un-sudden as possible. By this I mean, try and let it adapt. I took that guitar on tour with me, and it sat in the back of a very cold van overnight, in it's case. I know how cold it was because we had to sleep there with it, and the moisture from our breath froze onto the ceiling of the van. but I didn't have any problems with my guitar at all.

Keep it in it's case always. No leaning against walls for longer than 2 minutes etc etc.

Get a tech give it a good setup so everthing is great to start off with. give it a chance in life

The only trouble i've had is the neck moving about but its nothing a couple of truss adjustments didnt sort out. I have 2 neck-thu's a RAN custom and a kramer baretta both awsome, prefer them over bolt-ons to be honest.

i like neckthrus for the accessibility of higher frets, but i also like the practicality of boltons.

so why not go for something which combines elements of both?!

get an aanj guitar from ibanez, it combines the practicality of a bolt with better access to the higher frets. granted that the accessability of the higher frets is better on a neckthru, but still aanj;s are still much better than any other bolt on neck joint.

I actually find that an Ibanez all-access joint provides slightly better access to the higher frets than the various neck thrus I've played, and even the one I own.

Anyway...anything to keep in mind when changing your regular strings to a heavier gauge on a neck thru? Obviously changing the action...but is there anything else?
