Help with playing Satriani's Midnight
Hi. I'm trying to play Midnight without using a damper... I've heard it's very doable. I'm mainly having trouble when the rhythmic part starts, particularly muting the low E string... I find that unless I lift the finger totally off the string, I can't press it back down fast enough to get a good clear sound... But when I lift my finger completely off the string, it rings...
Any tips? Thanks!

you shouldt use your hands to mute, just wrap a cloth or one of them respect4all rubber bracelets to silince the first fret, works more than perfect for me

I love playing that piece. I lift my fingers completely off when I legato. It just allows me to get a fresh hammer on when I come back down. Just work with it, watch that vid that garr posted and follow his technique.

Thanks for the vid garr... So it looks like Satch isn't using a damper... So is it just the way in which he lifts off the fretboard that stops the string from ringing?

you could use your tapping hand palm or thumb to mute the strings

he could be using a compressor.
or reverb also dampens sound, and in most of the versions he's done this song with it has been played with reverb. just mess around

Ok. Thanks everyone. deadnight_warrior, I think I'll be using your suggestion of muting with the thumb of the tapping hand... That seems to work for me.

Whoa I so want to learn that piece. I looked at the tab and it seems kinda tricky, is it really as hard as it seems or did you guys pick it up fast? I gotta look more into this virtuoso stuff... I have some of Satriani's CD's and I love his shit.

I think "Midnight" and "Always with me, Always with you" are relatively easy on Surfing with the Alien... Still hard for me... The other tracks on Surfing have too many "weird" things going on with the whammy bar and harmonics...
Midnight looks tricky but it isn't that bad... But the muting is tricky if you don't use some type of damper or cloth to stop the open strings from ringing...

It's kind of a bitch if it's the first two hand tapping piece you try...which is the case for me. I got about half of it, still fumblefucking a little bit, but not too bad.
