Feedback...

OK, I practiced today with another guitarist who had a solid state marshall MG, and I had my Peavey Triple XXX head running. His head was 100x louder which surprised me. Could anybody explain why my head which is 120watts tube couldn't be heard over his 100watt solid state? And also, when I did crank it, there was this nonstop horrible feedback that was ear shattering, can somebody help me solve this problem? Thanks

turn down your gain, and turn up your mids.

Could be that you fucked up a powertube when trying to use your head with headphones.

The master volume was cranked, the channel volume was cranked, the mids were cranked, highs at about 1 O'clock and bass around 1 O'clock. Gain was at 12 O'clock.

How can I find out for sure if it is the power transformer or a powertube, and how much should this cost to replace?

Cheers

you have to replace all powertubes at once, i guess you've got 4 of em so that would be around 100 if you do it by yourself

Good info, but that still does not solve my problem of knowing whether its the power transformer, powertubes, or just that its not as loud as the solid state.

Cheers

depends on the tubes... you can get a quad of jj 6l6's for about $60 from www.dougstubes.com and then to have a tech rebias and check everything out in the amp, maybe another $40 or so.

if the tech should find something else wrong... transformers are pretty expsensive and he'll charge you more for the labor of putting it in too.

in the end you learn a valuable lesson. don't plug headphones into a speaker output.

*edit* sorry it looks like i edited your post because i accidentally hit edit instead of quote.

What does it mean to "re-bias" the tubes? I've heard of this but am still clueless to the meaning. And are there any easy-to-spot signs that will tell if the powertubes are shot and if the transformer is shot as well?

Cheers

Also, the amp is by no means quiet whilst being played on its own. It's loud enough to shake the room slightly when cranked, but I can barely hear it over that solid state Marshall MG.

Cheers

biasing is within the amp, not the tubes..
