The official POLISH death metal thread
poland has spawned a ton of really great and more importantly really unique death metal bands
vader-everyone knows who they are, the most famous of the polish DM bands. famous for their drumming -RIP Doc, who played on many of their albums- and their riffing style (heavy but no breakdowns per se) they are well known and respected
yattering-ah! always passed up, and its a real shame. they started out really simple with "Human's Pain" , just a slightly more technical than average DM album with good analog sound. they really went up a level with their next album, "murder's concept". this album is one of the most brutal and twisted sounding albums ever, not to mention the cover art! they released genocide which was just a step down from "murder's concept" and then they released III which was techno based . they also put out a live DVD called creative chaos that was recorded at that one polish venue (lights on the ground, behemoth have made a video there too, its in krakow)and then metalminds put out an unofficial live CD which was just a rip of the audio. most noteable about yattering was Zabek's drumming, very talented. the band wrote their riffs around his drum paterns so his departure heralded the end of yattering
behemoth-argueably the most exciting up and comer from poland, the band really hit their stride with "zos kia cultus" and "demigod" after a few solid albums "satanica" and "thelema.6" they have a black metal beginning, but nergal was about 14 when he started behemoth so most of the early stuff is pretty damn weak. inferno's drumming is the stuff of legend, as a matter of fact, it could be said about all the polish bands so far
decapitated-poland's reputation as a death metal spawning point is carried on this group's shoulders. i doubt there's anyone here who doesnt have the first three albums (negation celebrated its 2nd b-day march 9th) but if there is- get them! the band released a real "love it or hate it" album with organic hallucinosis, the latest. undeniably technical but lacking a bit of the soul that they had originally
anal stench-AHHH YES!!!! one of my favs! totally overlooked (no doubt on account of the lame name) this band released two awesome death metal albums. i give full credit to youngguitarist14 for turning me onto these guys, who features sauron from decapitated on vocals half the time (double vocalist)
the first album was kind of standard but good death metal, but "red revolution" is very cool! a communist themed album with awesome produciton reminscent of "failures for gods"
too conclude, poland's put out some of the best metal bands on the planet. i just wanted to make this thread to inform those who needed it, and to encourage discussion of other bands (i thought about adding tristania, but they didnt really do it for me anyways) from mighty poland!

probably (im listening to gorguts now), but this is the poland thread, not compare countries thread. spend some time typing up bios and shit like that and make a canada thread and id be stoked to join the conversation, or ill make one myself eventually
edit
plus everyone knows about bands like cryptopsy martyr and gorguts, whereas yattering and anal stench fly under the radar

to stick on topic, Decapitated are probably my favourite polish DM band, although their last album is kinda weak compared to Winds of Creation and the others.
another great DM band from Poland: Dies Irae.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong album, but didn't FFG have really shitty production?
I'm just asking that question then leaving this thread alone, considering I haven't heard a damn one of those bands...

Lacking soul? that's a bit harsh. It's definitely not lacking any soul, they just took a different approach to the songwriting. They decided to make it more rhythmically complex, rather than melodically like their previous releases. I encourage bands to try new things; I would rather see a band show they can write in more than one style, than to stick with the same style every release. If you want to hear stuff like WoC and Nihility, then listen to those albums, if you want to hear something different, listen to OH. Sorry for the rant, but I just happen to be growing quite fond of OH, and while it's different, it's still fucking awesome.

Polish death metal bores me as a whole
Its all solid stuff, and always seems to be solid, accurate, and know exactly where its going stylistically, but thats part of the problem with it, I think. Of course im painting a whole scene with a large brush, but you know what I mean.
I would not of said Behemoth are up comers. Theyre very well established, I thought. Theyre great in moderation, but as I say, a bit dull. But live, theyre meant to be the shit. Ill check em out when I can.
This said am I the only one who feels Behemoth and Nile are made for each other, Live? Just something about (later) Behemoth is reminiscent of Nile, imo. Doesnt touch it, technically, but yeah.
I dno maybe its all the Nile w/ Behemoth gigs ive heard of doing that to me
Im gonna go home and listen to Yattering i think and give em another go

well, id consider them up and comers because they just really broke through the scene, at least in america, after zos
walpurgis-yeah, failures had kind of a rough sound but so does the anal stench album , the drums sound like they did on failures, just a little better and not as flat (by the way that sound came from not triggering)

Hey Trans,
I moved to the other side of Poland ( I study there - Wroclaw University) and I'm quite busy here.
Vader, Behemoth and Decapited are most promoted but not the best bands from Poland believe me.

Behemoth are nowhere near as technical as Nile. Sure, Nergal can sweep, but still.

Even the mighty Inferno can't touch Kollias. Nile is more brutal and more tech since I can play Behemoth and can't Nile.
Also everytime I read this thread I think it says Pollish, as in clean death metal. mmmm

Transient man you even listened to both bands? You're in a discussion that you're clearly wrong in.
Unless you can show me Behemoths equivalent songs to;
Masturbating the War God
Execration Text
Burning Pits Of The Duat
Multitude of Foes
Hell, even The Blessed Dead. The guitar score is more intricate than behemoth ever is (Ive heard all their albums... so unless I missed something?) and Id argue that Niles composition and arrangement is much more technical and sophisticated than Behemoths (but part of this can be down to personal preference, of course. But look at the title track of AOTW compared to Behemoth songs... the composition runs circles around it.)
I dont want to jack this thread in to Nile worship thread, not at all, but as it was something I said before, I just want to clear it up. Id still like to know if anyone thinks the two bands are suited to each other, though. I think the styles and choice of notes is sometimes/often complimentary.

Yeah man, Nile kick Behemoth's ass in technicality. Black metal isn't usually too technical though, is it?

i would, if i knew on what grounds i could find songs equivalent too! no need to get personal either, it seems like everyones getting touchy about this. leave emotion out of it... im interested in a comparison now. by the way i like both bands! a lot.

eh man Im not gettin emotional? wtf. Its not personal either, if there was someone else whod agree with you, id aim at them too
On equivalent? It should be obvious id have thought. Technical, in terms of metal, its always a given we're talking about guitar, as as its been said in numerous accounts, guitar parts are the focus, with extreme metal. Certainly its what I was referring to, which is why I originally said about the two bands styles being similar, but not technically similar. The over riding instrument in both bands and intrinsically, death metal, is guitar, which shows choice of notes and at a sort of crude form, melody.
So yeah, in comparison to guitar technicality. Speed, originality... that sort of stuff. I mean, it is a moot point, and Im amazed the conversation is going on, as I meant it offhandedly and not really expect it to be discussed, I was just interested in the bands' styles.
Id say I liked both bands alot, but I dont. That is to say, I listen to Nile more. But I still like Behemoth alot, its just I cant really listen to them for prolonged periods of time, it gets repetitive (the same could be said for Nile though, depends on the listener.) On topic, (even more so) I have the same problem with Vader. A good band, and I love some of their songs, but a whole albums worth of their stuff often gets me a little bored so to speaK. (although their newest full length, the Beast, went some way to solve this issue I reckon)
Same applies to Decapitated. (anything after Winds, really)
Funny though how these three bands are pretty much the most well known [Over-rated?] Polish bands... perhaps it just says something about our tastes.

haha id say the opposite about behemoth / nile, that is i listen to behemoth more and find nile more same-y. i like black seeds best
i dont know, songs like sculpting the throne ov seth, slaves shall serve, harlot ov the saints are all on level with nile songs. better, imo
vader! yeah the older stuff is dull but the art of war is such a good album, er , ep

I wouldn't call Behemoth black metal. Not anymore anyway.
I'll be looking into Anal Stench, anything compared with FFG must be good.I like "Winds of Creation" but other than that I don't care much for Decapitated.Yattering rules, just got into them actually.I think Vader is just plain dull, nothing about them appeals to me.

Decapitated are fucking amazing. The best band to come out of Poland IMO.

Unless you can show me Behemoths equivalent songs to;
Masturbating the War God

Thanks for saving me a job! Oh, and I agree with your assertion that Nile and Behemoth do fit well together. I've always imagined Nile as the slaves who experienced the brutality of the pharoahs whereas I consider Behemoth to reside within the more regal climes of Egyptian society - their sound has a certain pomp and circumstance to it.
Transient: You mentioned Sculpting the Thone of Seth is on the same technical level as any Nile song. Well, I have a direct comparison of a similar Nile song, i.e. accoustic intro followed by the main body of the song, that is far more technical in every aspect. Listen to Libation Unto the Shades Who Lurk in the Shadows of the Temple of Anhur (which I always considered to be the intro) and then Masturbating the War God.
Quod erat demonstrandum, old chap!

its a damn good cage match then , john and imbored. lets leave it at that!
im excited for anything new behemoth puts out. i picked up "slave shall serve" the ep and wasnt thrilled, but the two live songs are great. those guys are in my opinion the hardest touring band on the planet right now

The only reason I ever learn about bands is this site. I recently checked out alot of decapitated. Winds of Creation was their absolute best. Nihility bored me and I couldn't listen to it all the way through. The Negation was amazing still bored me in the end, but not as much as Nihility.

I've never been one to like a song for odd time signatures. I care more for the way it sounds.
Anyway I never finished listening to the whole Demigod album. That's something I need to get around to.

As for canadian owning the metal scene..we may not own but i can say that we have/had lot of unique bands : Voivod, Martyr, Quo Vadis, Gorguts (RIP), Obliveon (RIP), DBC (RIP)

Here's what U.L has to say about them:
Quote:
NEW SIGNING DEVILYN from Poland, this band offers some of the most highly skilled musicianship in extreme Metal today. Devilyn will enter the studio in summer 2006 for a fall/winter release. Keep an eye out for this one.

Imo music isn't about the "soul", music is what you make it.
