Extreme Death Metal - Recording Question
I was recently at the Derek Roddy website, and I viewed the Behold Judas studio video. Now I have a question, I saw Derek had headphones in his ears and the guitars are hearable in the video. Now most bands record the drum tracks first, but I am wondering, does Derek record his drum tracks after the guitars? Sorry if it's a dumb question but I have been wondering this lately.
Cheers

Thats what I was wondering. I always wondered how drummers knew when to do, for example, breaks in the song where there is silence except for a chord hit that is accompanied by a cymbal hit. Anyways, I <3 Derek Roddy.

I normally have a guitarist record a scratch track(not used in final mix) with the drummer. It helps out for overall reference in general. Just put the amp in the vocal booth or something.

almost all bands do a scratch track, then keep the drums from that, and build the rest of the song. if you watch the CC dvd that came with wretched spawn theyre doing that

Traditionally the drummer plays with either the guitarist or a metronome.

I mean i don't know how the "pros" do it. But when i record i'll record the entire band playing the song.. or at least like what was said guitars and drums. Then go back record the drums, then guitars. Then bass or vocals.
And obviously any extra stuff is added in when needed. Piano or whatever.
Also a metronome is very handy to tie to parts together. i.e. Say i recorded the band playing.. And there is a piano part that splits the song. Well i'll record both parts seperately (band parts) and use a metronome to sync up the 2 parts with the piano part. (if that makes sense)
But anyways. Thats just what i do.
