It is sweet, but it would be sweeter with a EMG 81-7/707 setup.

That's what I plan on doing in the future, man is it going to look sweet, and I can't imagine how it's going to sound. And yes I love black guitars, but each guitar has different color hardware

Didn't you just get that Jackson Stars?
So what do you think of the 1527 so far?
Did you put an OFR on the Jackson Dinky?

IM JOINING THE FUCKING CLUB
I fucking just got my RG 1527 today - its fucking great.
Only one bad thing I noticed... it smells weird
WTF were those Japanese doing with it!!!
But wow it is good. I think a pickup change will help though.. deathmaster did you mention that ou are not changing the pickups? why not?
I think the clean is great, but the Distortion sounds too twangy for my liking...
And WOW the neck is so flat. its not curved its flat.
Mine cost $1690 Aus NEW
My digital camera is really bad.. but anyway...
O yeah blindvomit you put your 81-7 / 707 's in yet??? I think ill put an x2n7 and Jazz7 in mine ...still deciding.....

Well, my first band practise with it surprised me. I guess I assumed the pickups would just be really thin, and I found them to be surprisingly ballsey, and through my 5150 it holds it's own.
I had a second practise the other week and I guess the 'honeymoon' period had worn off and they didn't sound as good as I remembered, but still, not bad enough to warrant me spending another £80 (or whatever) on an Evo for the bridge.
My custom is currently being built (slowly but surely, it's goes as fast as I have cash for it) which will feature EMGs, so there is no need for me to worry too much about the Ibanez's sound. It's good enough to live with until the custom is finished.
You're right about the neck... I love it. Everything feels so fluid to play on it!

awesome man ... hmm so I guess I should buy an x2n or and evo... reckon the neck pickup is good enough for me not to change it to a Jazz?...

RG1527 - EMG 81-7/707 question
Hi guys,
I'm seriously thinking of picking one of these RG1527's from the local music shop this week but I have one question about the pickups.
I'd like to install a pair of EMG 81-7/707's in it. I read somewhere that they don't fit (?)
Could someone let me know if this is true or not, please? Perhaps those of you who tried it? Thanks.

Seven strings are different. If you want a 707 in your guitar you have to do some routing. I don't know if its the same for an 81-7.

Yes, its the same for the 81-7, they are both in the bass pickup housing.
Don't bother putting a 707 in the bridge though...it sounds like POOP.

Thanks for the help, guys. If I get this RG1527, I'd have to take it to the local tech for the routing. (I'm too afraid to try it myself. Maybe on some shitty guitar yes.)
It would cost a lot to buy the pickups and for the service so I'm considering either getting this RG1527 or going custom B.C. Rich.
Depends on the price.
Hmm... philkilla, I'm very interested in trying out other pickups besides the EMG 81 and 85's but unfortunately, I don't have the possibility of trying out guitars. Most people around here use stock pickups or EMG's.

Sorry to go a little off topic but I'm curious... John Holland mentioned the X2N-7. I wonder... since I don't know anyone where I live who uses these pickups, would anyone know of a site where I could check out some samples? Of course it's not the same as trying them out personally but at least I can get an idea 'cause I'm currently using EMG-81/85's but am willing to experiment, see if I can get a heavier sound.
Thanks!

uhh.. carbonized.. do you own a 7 string???
EMG 81 / 85 goes into 6 strings.
Notice the 7 on the x2n-7.
But of course x2ns for 6 strings exist, just go to dimarzio website.
This may be a really dumb answer but you didnt really specify whether you owned a 7 string yet specified a 7 string pickup.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I was just curious about the sound of the X2N-7. Actually, I should have left the 7 out but anyway.
I get the impression the EMG-81 is the best pickup for heaviness. What do you guys think? Any other pickups you reckon is/are just as good or better?
Oh, *insert name here*. I have a B.C. Rich Ironbird NJ Series with an EMG-81/85 setup but I might be getting an Ibanez RGT42DX real soon. That's got a mahogany body, if it helps.

I also have the 81 / 85 in a BC Rich, however the Warlock bronze, and I think its not that great.
I seriously don't see all the hype around them. Maybe its my crappy guitar, but I doubt it would be much better in a top of the line Ibanez or similar.
Point im getting to is that its all preference. A Seymour Duncan invader in the thickest, heaviest, most exotic mahogany bodied guitar will sound fucking shitloads heavier than an EMG.
It all depends on the amp aswell etc. etc.
Basically, it all depends, and active pups are not better than passive pups.
I dont see the point for wood with active pups. Just buy a guitar mad of plastic / metal / glass... whatever, .. and they will all sounds similar with EMG pups.
I don't reccomend the Glass guitar though.

Seymour Duncan Invader huh? I'll look into that one, thanks.
Right, I too believe active EMG's in bodies of different woods would sound similar.
What's more, I don't even understand how electric guitars are said to have different tonal properties, depending on the body wood. I mean, if it were an acoustic guitar, where the sound is produced from the cavity and in that case, the texture of the wood would have a key role in the quality of the tone etc. But in electric guitars, whether it's an agathis bodied guitar or a swamp ash bodied guitar, the strings are, after all, all connected to metal bridges, you know?
Also, the paint work and glue I think greatly minimize resonance of the body wood.
Oh and finally, even if the body wood does has an influence on the tone of the guitar, and I assume it comes from the resonance, the vibration of the body wood, then when a player holds the guitar and it touches against his/her body, wouldn't that stop the body from vibrating/resonating, hence killing the resonance? I'm thinking in the same terms of how drums sound when they are played without muffling and with muffling.
I have never had the chance to try out how guitars with different body woods sound, so I could be completely wrong here but sometimes I can't help but think all this body wood/fretboard wood fixation is a hype, especially when it comes to active pickups.
Thanks for the replies, guys. Keep 'em coming!

on an electric guitar the STRINGS vibrate and the pick-ups hear the vibration and send the signal and what not to the amp. on an acoustic the STRINGS vibrate into the hole and the sound is echoed around inside the acoustic making it louder

Thanks for that monkey, for completely stating the obvious, and offending Carbonized, since his post was actually quite a lot more sophisticated than your anal bludgeoning.
Carbonized: You have a good point. But I still think the tonewood makes a difference.
My Warlock is a fucking shit heap heavier than my Ibanez, despite them both being made of basswood and having similar body area. They sound much different (ok , i know there are many factors, but im remembering back to the time when they were both stock).
I mean cmon, if wood didn't make a difference, why is there so many different woods used for guitars?
When I strum the open strings on my Ibanez, I can feel the fin of the guitar vibrating against my chest. ...And it keeps going. So my body therefore is not stopping the vibration of the guitar.
Your right.. The strings are connected to metal hardware. But that doesn't matter, Since the pickups pickup the sound. Nonetheless, im guessing the material/shape/consistency of the bridge / nut / tuners has an effect on the tambre of the strings. That's an eductaed guess, I don't know this as a fact, but it seems highly probable.
Ok, so the pickups get the sound of the string ringing... have you ever taken apart a pickup? Simple magnet and copper coil design (although I might add there is a bout 1 kilometre of copper wire - no joke!) and Im pretty sure Passive pickups and Active pickups are both electromagnets (hence the wires connected to the coils) just the difference is that Actives have the 9v battery which acts as a preamp to give it a shitload of more power.
Anyway, The sound doesnt come from the pickup alone. It picks up the sound of the strings, and the vibration of the body has a lot to do with the overall sound with the pickup. the vobration may be so subtle that you don't feel it, but since the pickup is screwed into the wood, the vibration enters the pickup. I dont know exactly how this affects it, im guessing an effect on the ultra-sensitive copper coils. If that all comes together it all makes sense.
Yeah... Google it I guess...

Hahaha anal bludgeoning. It's ok, mate. I'm sure monkey didn't mean to offend me or anything. I'm glad people understood what I mean 'cause my English isn't that good.
Anyway, yeah problematic. There must be a reason why there are so many types of wood used to guitar bodies. I just don't get anal about it anymore, especially since I found out Alder and Swamp Ash bodied guitars are for the time being out of my range as far as £$ goes hehe... (Well, the RGT42DX I'm getting has a mahogany body so it shouldn't sound like shit at all.)
And I wonder why that Joe Satriani or Steve Vai (I always confuse the two) is now playing guitars with basswood bodies. Basswood is generally considered to be one of the cheaper tonewoods. Just bassy tone in general.
Thanks for all the info, mate.

Yeah I wonder about this 'Basswood revolution' myself. I mean, BC Rich used to make their lower-end guitars out of alder and more recently agathis. Now their shit guitars are made out of basswood. But many high end guitars are made of basswood too, I don't get it... There must be basswood of different quality I guess... I guess its all preference... Are Les Pauls made out of Basswood?... Actually Im guessing they aren't, since theyre pretty much the heaviest retail guitar. Probabaly mahogany... Anyway interesting topic. . . .

I personally don't think that the guitar wood makes much of a difference tonally when playing with heavily overdriven distortion, regardless of active or passive pickups. It does when playing twangy shit on Teles and Strats, but lots of gain pretty much swamps it. Sustain is a different matter I guess.
The Seymour Duncan Invader gets muddy for anything below standard tuning does it? I had one in the bridge of my NJ Warlock, tuned in Eb and D, and it was never muddy. Heavy though. Is it so bad it won't clean up with the amps EQ tweaking?
The 7 string version interests me, and I'm considering one (or a Dimarzio Evolution) for the bridge of my RG1527 (notice how I got back on topic there? go me) and both manufactures state that they basically redesigned the pickups for 7 string to take into account the possible muddiness of the low B.
The Seymour Duncan Designed pups in my Jackson 7 string are muddy, and just shit in general, but then, what do I expect
I know I said I wasn't gonna change the bridge pickup (in my Ibanez) before, but since playing live with it and a load more practises, I've discovered that it's not quite as hot as I am used to (EMG 81's in my old 6 string).

thats cool if you think that, if you dont notice the difference, you dont notice the difference...
however, i think theres plenty of difference in tone when it comes to wood, minor or major differences which can make or break your tone. which is why when it comes to ordering my custom ran, wood selection will be done maticulously and with whilst having the kind of tone i want in my mind.

Maybe I would notice if I ever got to A/B two identical guitars with the same pickups, amp etc, but with different body woods, but I never have so far.

Alright, after spending more time with the prestige ...
Stock humbuckers have to go. Which I was expecting ...
The neck. Holy shit. Today I set the action on it, and the height of the string is actually consistent from fret to every single fret. I've tried doing this with every other guitar I've ever owned, but no matter how much I played with the truss rod and bridge, if I were able to make the strings perfectly parallel to the fretboard, somewhere there was a problem area, either the high E string would choke out on bends greater than a half step, or there might be string buzz on a certain fret, and I always had to make a compromise to ensure that every note on the fretboard could breathe properly during play.
THIS guitar was made for that. I'm going to have to get used to playing a guitar with utterly perfect action. Everything else I've owned up until this point was an absolute toy.
And it makes me want to play more. I'm having to force myself to go to sleep or else I'll be up all night playing it.

Yeah, the pickups are pretty good for stock, but they aren't as mean as I'd like them to be.
The neck is definitely the best part of this guitar, I have to agree with you, it's simply killer.
A little live image for the Pron fans among you.

It's all good man, Not a WII neck but still a quality Ibanez neck, Its Korean made, but really, not a very noticeable difference there, and it has a fixed bridge, which means no Floating Trem hassle.
If you can, get it. You won't be displeased at the result.
