favourite jazz and classical music
I think in order to grow as a musician we should appreciate and understand more than just metal. If you limit yourself to listening to just metal, or any one form of music, you instantly cut yourself off from your creative energies. Here's a short list, mainly some Jazz and blues stuff, of what I like to listen to on off days. I'll amend this thread in the future with any new discoveries.
Leo Kotke
Ray Bryant
Miles Davis
john coltrane
henry mancini
doyle dykes
dr. John
Laurence Juber
Dim Dim
Bob Dylan
Kenny Sultan
Yo Yo Ma
Thelonious Monk

Ornette Coleman hard on the ears? I can't even remember when I thought that anymore.
I listen to music. Everybody here listens to music. It's impossible to listen to and enjoy nothing but metal unless you grow up under test situations in some bizarre experiment designed to prove that listening to nothing but metal will cause you to kill yourself. No need to point out to them that they'll 'grow' by listening to music; I doubt there's anybody here who doesn't listen to 'non-metal.' Hell, with the metal scene like it is now you get a lot of 'non-metal' without even leaving the genre (folk is not metal, jazz is not metal, blues is not metal, funk is not metal, meter experiments resembling early ballets by Stravinsky and later records by King Crimson are not metal, etc.). You'll do yourself still more good by not caring much at all about genre lines, in which case you won't be surprised, or even feel you're doing anything out of the ordinary, by listening to music outside of those lines.

Easy listening is one thing. An aural assault is another. When you've got a lot of avant-jazz friends, you don't really have much of a problem with Ornette Coleman. Just like anything else, the more you listen to it the less strange it is.

Yeah dude. Sabbath's also considered the first doom metal band aswell
But for the subject of this thread: Fuck. I like a huge variety of music
Jazz, Blues, Rock (some of it), I love the Beatles, Godspeed, You Black Emperor... fuck, too many to name off. And I really seem to like Flamenco, but I don't know what cds to buy/download and such, how do I get into it? The only flamenco album I have is Flametal's The Elder, wich is Flamenco metal.

Back when they started Metal didn't even exist. A lot of they're songs were blues and psychadellic. Just because they were heavy doesnt mean they were metal. You dont consider Iron Butterfly metal evgen though innagaddadavida was the heaviest shit around. Cat scratch fever, black dog.........Jimi Hendrix in a way was more metal than Iomi. I guess it depends on which Sabbath album your talking about.

Jazz, especially Ornette coleman (has been mentioned) - fucking amazing, and John Zorn (check out Masada) is excellent (he's done stuff with Patton too)
Electronic music - Getting into this at the moment, especially Squarepusher - I strongly recommend everyone at least has a listen to Squarepusher's 'Go plastic' album - its absolutely mental stuff, it completely changed my attitude towards electronic music.
Avant garde classical stuff - the standard stuff, Schoenberg, Berg etc
Old school hip hop / rap (is there a difference?), is good for a laugh - public enemy and NWA especially.
Primus/Les claypool - Primus are a bit hit and miss album wise, I'd recommend 'Frizzle fry' and 'sailing the seas of cheese'
Oh, and Mongolian throat singing is cool.

i ain't gonna list all the bands i like, because that would be boring.
instead, ill list a few little known good bands.
XTC - I suppose its 80's pop punk, and although that is quite possibly the worst genre combination imaginable, XTC are brilliant
family - very little known early 60's rock band, with elements of almost every other genre around at the time. incredible melodies & harmonies. i really really recomend you have a listen. especially the album fearless. though it will be extroadinarily difficult to find. oh yeah, and their drummer went on to play for iron maiden.
fleetwood mac(old) - with peter green, strait forward blues, done really well
chicken shack - again strait forward blues done really well
jeff beck - greatest guitarist known to man. theres nobody who can touch him. (unless all you care about is speed). his old stuff lacks style, but since he ditched rod stewart and made is own instrumental music, he's become a legend.

Actually all non-metal I listen to is jrock.
Some good ones:
Dir en grey
X Japan
The Piasu (I don't have any songs because it's really hard to find them. This band is pretty old too. Almost everyone of them died in accident when they was filming their music video. O.o They did some cool thrash metal. There's one music video on youtube though)

I have every song by X Japan and hide, if you wan't some. I don't think new Diru is nu-metal. Some riffs might sound a little bit, but it's still more like rock, with growls. But their older stuff is still much better.
